“It means nothing to me,” I lied. I was still being stubborn. I wanted to see how he would react.

“Fantastic,” he said, and wrapped a strip of bandage around my food. “Done. It might be a little sore for a few hours, but I assume forest dragons heal at the same rate as us. This ointment will help hasten it.”

“Is that it?” I said. “And I was getting excited, thinking you were going to lick my foot.”

“Is that what they do on Silver Mountain?” he asked unamused. “Raw dragon saliva is hardly as effective at healing as a—”

“It was a joke,” I said.

He started to pack up the box, then in a low voice that was nearly a growl, said, “If there’s anywhere else you may have injured…”

My stomach spiraled with excitement.

“There might be,” I said. Was Ari trying to say what I thought he was trying to say? This man with his stupid frown was impossible to read.

“Show me.”

I was cautious about being wrong, but I could test the waters.

“My hand,” I said. “My hand swiped the flames.”

He took my hand and examined it.

“Hm,” he grunted. “I don’t see anything. But I trust you.”

I didn’t know what I expected him to do next, whether he was playing this game with me or not, so when he lifted my hand to his lips and slowly ran his tongue along the side of my palm, I had no control over the excited gasp that slipped out of my mouth. My cock throbbed painfully. Ineededhim.

Ari’s eyes pierced mine as his tongue reached the tip of my finger. This was happening, and I could hardly believe it. Somehow, that glower I’d taken for hatred had become something else entirely.

“Is that all?” he asked, setting my hand down.

My breath was short. “No. There are a few more places.”

“Show me.”

I pointed to the side of my neck. “Embers,” I said. “They hit me.”

Ari removed his glasses and put them on top of his medicine box, and my heart pounded as he leaned in. His fingers slipped around the back of my neck, sending a shiver down my spine. If he felt it, he made no acknowledgment. His scent filled my lungs as he brought his lips to the area I indicated, and I felt his hot breath tickle my skin just before he made contact. His tongue rolled out and tasted me, pulling another moan from my lips. His ear was right there, I knew he could hear just how he was making me feel.

And suddenly, my needs overwhelmed any patience I had to continue this game. I wanted himnow. I grabbed the front of his shirt and pushed my lips hard against his like I was some kind of starved lunatic.

Iwasa starved lunatic. And Ari, the alpha I was so certain wanted nothing to do with me, was the one who had driven me mad.

He returned my kiss with equal fervor, his arm curling around my back as his other hand gripped the back of my neck and held me tight to him. I melted into his touch and tasted his tongue as he thrust it into my mouth. If my cock was any harder, it might’ve pierced right through the front of my robes. I was certain I was so wet that I would leave a puddle on that beautiful wood floor.

“Strange place to get burned,” Ari said as he gripped my chin with his fingers and tilted my head up.

“Shut up,” I murmured, offering my tongue from my open mouth.

He swirled his tongue against mine, and our eyes were open and locked. Then he closed the gap and brought our lips back together.

“So is this what this whole thing was about?” he said after we broke the kiss. “Trying to get my attention?”

“Ari, aside from wondering why you were giving me angry looks all the time, I had absolutely no interest in your attention.”

“Maybe that was a mistake. I certainly was paying attention to you.”

“You ought to try other expressions. Happy. Excited. Maybe then I wouldn’t have thought you were staring me down.”
