“Good. That dirty old lighthouse is no place for a pregnant omega,” I said. “And it’s much too far. I’ll take you back today, you gather your things, and I’ll help you move into the main house tomorrow. You can tell Kai and the others that you want to be near the gate.”

“Oh, is that what I’m going to do? So, you’re assuming I’m going to stay in T’Wanu Na.”

“Leaving would make things difficult,” I said, caught off guard.

“Aren’t you curious about Silver Mountain?” he asked with a smile that had now become familiar.

“You’re baiting me,” I said. “Stop it.”

“That’s what you’d like isn’t it?” he said, and his smile turned into a grin. “Me ‘baiting’ you.”

I was powerless to control the reaction that happened between my legs.

“You know what I meant,” I muttered.

Istil laughed and punched my arm. “Lighten up!”

We rolled up to the junction that split towards the east side of the island, west to the Blue Fin estate, or south to our destination. The crater rim and its dense jungle stood ahead of us, the wind carrying off glittering threads of mist from the waterfalls that stretched like fishing lines down the exposed rock.

“On second thought, I think I will come to the main house tonight,” Istil announced, nodding to himself. “It’s such a long ride to the south side.”

“Are you sure? You could fly the rest of the way.”

“I could… but then I’d have to be alone. I don’t want to be alone. Not right now.”

“I understand,” I said.

I snapped the reins and turned the cart onto the west road.

Chapter9

Istil

The main house, which had been such a hive of activity these past several weeks, was quiet. Shen and Enry had returned home. I wouldn’t be able to keep this to myself for much longer.

I stood beside the waterfall pond that held the drakengate and watched the colorful fish flit below the churning surface. There was now a set of rock stairs and a bamboo handrail that descended into the water to the gate, and Makoa had built a towel shelf for arriving visitors who had to get wet.

“Alright. Your room is ready.”

I turned around and saw Ari coming down the courtyard pathway. He’d changed into a beautiful T’Wanu-style robe, turquoise and red with flower patterns running down the sleeves. A complete change from his usual plain attire of trousers and a button-up shirt that didn’t do very much to accentuate his form. These robes draped over his shoulders in a relaxed way that highlighted every curve and angle of his delicious body. It was open at the chest, perfect for both the balmy T’Wanu days and a horny omega who couldn’t pull his eyes away. It was no wonder I’d gotten pregnant. His seed had probably muscled its way into whatever useless barrier that potion had created. And I wanted him to muscle his way right into me again.

“Wonderful,” I said. “Thank you.”

There was an awkward pause. Part of me had thought I would be sleeping in his room—in his bed. Very silly of me. I could recognize that I wanted his cock while at the same time understanding that Ari was entirely not what I was after, nor what I needed, or even wanted. Like a thick tangle of stranglevines so tightly wound they could choke themselves out, Ari was rigid and restrained. He was exacting, strict, and overly measured. Everything I imagined my mate not to be like.

But he was also here, and that was something I deeply appreciated. He could’ve washed himself of any responsibility for this situation, but he hadn’t.

“Would you like me to show you to it?” he asked stiffly. “Or are you staying here? I have some work I need to take care of, so…”

“No, I’m coming.”

“I told Grandmother you’ll be staying here for some time,” he said as we walked together into the house.

“Did she ask why?”

“She did not. I’m sure she assumes you’re doing something with the mahinui.”

“Do you think she has any idea about…stuff?”
