The cells turned into a maze, stretching further and further in front of me. I continued to call for Jacques, but my voice was lost against the whispers echoing down the hall.

“Don’t be ssscared, sssiren…it will all be over soon…”

I lost my breath from both running and from fear, tripping down the hallways until I reached a dead end. I needed to go back to the stairs. I should have gone up, not gone into—

I turned around, gasping.

Henrik’s disheveled figure leaned against the prison bars, his arms hanging on them, his eyes watching me with a warped sense of delight.

It wasn’t Henrik.

I could tell by his yellow eyes that it wasn’t.

“Hello, sssiren,” he said, grinning as he watched me. “I’ve been waiting for you.”

CHAPTER 37—TAME

Every bit of my skin crawled as Henrik eyed me. There was something sharp in his eyes and teeth, as if he was ready to tear me apart piece by piece.

“Henrik?” I struggled to ask.

His grin widened.

“Ifthat’ssswhat you want to call me,” he replied, his voice deep and strangled.

The lights of the den flickered across his face in a way that was hard to catch the thoughts behind his eyes. I stepped closer, trying to read him. He chuckled, cocking his head to the side.

“Sorry, sssiren,” he said. “You can’t read me like thehumansss.”

“Who are you?”

“My nameisssn’timportant,” he returned. “Besidesss, I’d rather talk about you.”

His eyes raked over me for a long moment. I shivered.

“You’re very lovely,” he finally said. “You’reobvioussslya woman of highstatusssand well-grooming. Even if you didn’t charm him, I couldunderssstandwhy Henrik would want power over you.”

I stepped forward, suddenly angry at both the gull of the demon saying such a thing about Henrik.

“How long have you been possessing him?” I asked.

He shrugged. “I’ve been around for a while. I found him right after helosssthisssjob in the navy. When he was the mostpowerlesss. Theweakessst.”

“You’re wrong. Henrik isn’t weak.”

He threw his head back and made a screeching laugh, causing me to step back in fear once again.

“I have hissssoul,” the demon replied. “I beg to differ.”

Some part of me knew that he only had Henrik’s body, not his soul, but I lost my voice to object.

“It was quite thetassskto get hissssoul, though, I’ll admit.” He ran his fingers through his hair. “He fought me formonthsss. Until you, that is, the moment he found out you were asssiren…”

The demon snapped his fingers.

“He handed over hissssoulto me in a moment.”

I clenched my teeth, trying to keep them from chattering against each other. It wasn’t cold, but my blood suddenly felt like it was freezing in my veins.
