“You won’t have him,” I threw back. “We’ll find a way to get rid of you—”

“Henrikhasssto want that first,” the demon replied. “Sssofar, hehasssnointeressstin letting go of the power I can give him. And if hetriesss…”

The demon took a step back.

“I’ll kill him,” he finished.

As if a strong wind had blown through the den, Henrik was sent flying off his feet and into the wall behind him. I couldn’t tell if the crack against the wall was the stone or his bones, but I could tell that the painful cry from his lips was no longer the demon.

“Henrik!” I screamed, reaching for the key to the cell.

I unlocked the door, swinging open the door and rushing to his side as he lay curled up in pain. He slowly straightened out, sitting up against the wall. His demon smiled back at me.

“You’re brave, sssiren,” he said. “I’ll give you that.”

“I want to speak to him,” I demanded.

“Oh?” he asked, laughing. “And who are you to command me,sssiren?”

He wrapped a strong hand around my neck, pulling me toward him. As he pulled me in I could see yellow flicker across his eyes like candle flames.

“You know I cancrussshyour throat in the blink of an eye, don’t you?” he asked, wetting his lips.

I grabbed hold of his arm, unable to break his grip.

“But you won’t,” I returned. “Not with Henrik’s soul in there. He won’t let you hurt me.”

The demon laughed. “You’re sosssure? You don’t know him at all, do you?”

“I can see him in ways you can’t, demon.”

The demon cocked his head to the side, a small smile peaking from the corner of his lips.

“All right,” he said. “You want tossspeakto him? You can. But it won’t go the way you plan, sssiren.”

His hand released my throat as his eyes flickered once more. The look in his eyes suddenly hollowed, emptying until I could read the thoughts behind them once more.

Henrik.

Henrik took a moment to look around the cell, then back up at me. His eyes hardened.

“Hen—”

“You shouldn’t be here,” he said coldly.

“Henrik?” I asked again, grabbing his hand. “Henrik is that you? Don’t worry. Jacques will help you. He can get rid of the demon—”

“And why should I get rid of him?” he barked back. “So I can be controlled by creatures like you?”

Henrik came to his feet, grunting in pain. I put a hand to his shoulder, but he swatted it away.

“Get out,” he commanded. “There’s no telling what we’ll do to you.”

“You won’t hurt me. You won’t let him—”

“Won’t I?” he asked, squaring his shoulders at me. “Shouldn’t I have a way to protect myself from your power?”

He stared at me for a long moment, and I could see the brokenness in his eyes. I could hardly breathe seeing how much I had hurt him.
