He gave a shadow of a smile.

“Besides, I already understand your thinking,” he continued. “You thought because you helped Adrian that you could help Henrik as well, didn’t you?”

I sheepishly nodded.

“You’re not hard to figure out. Knowing this, I shouldn’t have left you alone. I apologize.”

His tone was sincere. I exhaled.

“I was trying to find you, but I got lost and I ended up at the cell…and I thought…”

He brought a hand to my head and patted it. He then tilted my chin to look up at him.

“When a man is possessed with demons,” Jacques said sternly, “it’s not your job to tame them. It’s his. Understand?”

The realization hurt, but I felt some relief in the reprimand. I nodded.

Jacques’s thumb came to my lips and wiped them gently. “Are you really all right?”

I swallowed, his touch more comforting than I anticipated. “Yes. Thanks to you. For someone who really doesn’t like me, you keep saving me. Thank you, Jacques.”

He turned his head away from me.

“You’re welcome,” he said. “Come on. We should go see the king.”

***

When we arrived at the throne room, the king was already preoccupied, with two men on their knees in front of him.

Luc and Adrian.

The king stood in front of them both, his eyes dark.

“Do you both understand?” the king asked, his voice cold and rigid.

They both slowly nodded, their eyes on the ground.

Jacques scoffed. “It looks like the king found them before we did,” he said. “That works out.”

I breathed in relief, seeing that they were both alive and unharmed. I took a step forward to greet them, but Jacques grabbed my arm and pulled me back.

“Let the king finish his work,” he said blankly. “Let’s go.”

I wanted to object, but Jacques pulled me from the throne room before I could say a word. He took me down the hall to the large fountain, gesturing for me to take a seat.

“We can wait here,” he said.

He didn’t sit next to me. He only stood, watching the door. Silence passed between us. I could feel how tense he was even though he wasn’t saying a word.

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

He grumbled but didn’t say anything understandable at first.

“You’ll stay with me from now on,” he eventually commanded.

My head spun for a brief moment while I tried to understand his words.

He looked down at me. “Luc was supposed to protect you per my command and he failed to do so. I’m not letting you go back to his room just so you can parachute out the door again.”
