“I had no idea what I was,” I said, almost in a whisper. “I care about you, Henrik. Truly. You’ve always been so strong and kind—”

“And where did my kindness get me?” he hissed back. “Kicked out of the navy? A laughingstock to the king himself? The inability to help my own family? I’ve been possessed by both a demon and a siren…Hasssmykindnesssled to anything profitable?”

His eyes flickered yellow once more, but he grabbed his head and grunted.

“Fight him,” I said, coming to his side. “Don’t let him take over…please…”

His hand struck out for my wrist, grabbing me and pulling me toward him. He stared deep into my eyes, the desperation and bitterness swirling in his dark, velvet eyes.

“If I get rid of him,” he whispered, “will you come to me?”

My heart completely froze as he stared at me, his lips parting as he breathed heavily in pain. Before I could speak, however, he shut his eyes and threw himself back against the wall, this time holding his head with both his hands.

“No!” he yelled. “I won’t!”

My feet froze to the ground, not knowing what to do.

“We’ll get rid of him,” I said. “We’ll get rid of the demon so you can—”

He straightened. “Why? So you canpossesssme?”

He reached out and gripped my wrists, spinning me around and forcing me against the wall. He stepped in closer, the bitterness in his eyes mingled tight with a twisted pride.

The demon was taking back over.

“Stop,” I said. “Don’t—”

“Do you want topossesssme too?” he asked. “You want mysssoulto play with?”

I shook my head at him. “Please let me explain—”

“You can take me too, then,” he hissed. “I’m tired of fighting. Against this demon, against my family, against you… I don’t have the strength anymore.”

His grip tightened until it felt like my wrists would snap in half. His eyes flickered yellow again, his teeth sharpening as I looked at them.

His lips pressed hard against mine. I could feel his desperation though his kiss, intensifying the more his mind slipped. It then switched, his kiss going from possessive to apologetic, and with a gasp, he pulled back.

“Save me,” he pleaded against my lips.

Suddenly, Henrik was ripped away from me. He flew back, hitting the ground. With a grunt, Jacques threw a hard punch across Henrik’s face, keeping him down.

“Goddamned demons,” Jacques cursed.

I stood frozen against the wall as the Judges came in to restrain Henrik before he could get back to his feet. Jacques wrapped an arm around me and led me out of the cell. I heard the cell slam behind us as Henrik’s demon screeched down the hallway. The sound made me shake, knocking the strength out of my knees. Jacques grabbed me, bringing me back to my feet and holding him tight against him.

“Are you all right?” he asked.

I leaned against his shoulder, burying my head in it. Jacques brought a soft hand to my shoulder as he held me.

“Let’s get you out of here,” he said. “The demon can still mess with your mind as long as you’re down here.”

Holding me up, Jacques led me out of the dungeons and helped me up the stairs as my head spun. When we reached thetop, my knees nearly went out again. Jacques held my elbows, not letting me fall.

“I should have told you to wait at the top of the stairs,” he muttered. “I didn’t think he could scent you—”

“You’re not going to yell at me?” I asked.

“No,” he said softly. “Demons are good at tricking people. It’s not your fault this time.”
