“It makes your victims insane. You lose control too easily.”

“So you want to offer your charmspeak?”

“No,” I said with a shake of my head. “I want to offer you my body.”

There was a puzzled amusement in his eyes, a slight hesitation that showed he didn’t hate the idea.

“What game are you trying to play with me,sssiren?” he asked. “You think I’m a fool?”

“Not at all. I think you’re limited in your power. As am I. We’d be much more useful together, don’t you think?”

He cocked his head to the side; so far, in fact, that I thought he was going to snap Henrik’s neck. It was proof that he liked the idea more than he cared to admit.

A demon couldn’t resist the offer for more power. That’s why they were so entranced by the Eros in the first place. It was in their nature.

“Demons don’tpossesss sssirens,” the demon finally replied, regaining composure.

“They can’t possessfullsirens,” I said, “but have you tried the reincarnates?”

The demon looked me over, hesitating.

“I’ll only offer this to you once, demon,” I said as calmly as possible. “Possess me instead of Henrik.”

Something deep flickered in his eyes for a moment, the yellow fading momentarily.

Henrik.

It was in a demon’s nature to want power. It was in Henrik’s nature to protect.

It was the one thing I could use to divide them.

The yellow returned to Henrik’s eyes, signaling that he wasn’t fighting hard enough. I would have to push them apart further.

“You would be the first to possess a knowing incarnate, wouldn’t you?” I asked. “Think of how much easier it would be to control the humans and the sirens in such a way.”

His tongue ran against his teeth. “You hate them that much?”

“I hate that the king loves them that much.”

It wasn’t difficult to act while saying that line. I remembered that part of myself far too clearly.

His eyes drifted down to the floor and then slowly crawled up my body.

Too slowly.

Jacques…Adrian…if you are planning to step in…

“There’s only one reason why I don’t believe you, little sssiren,” the demon said, sharply licking his lips.

He grabbed my wrist, pulling it up to his face as he looked at the scars from the stone I had thrown to protect Adrian.

The demon smiled sharply.

“If you hated them so much,” he said, “you wouldn’t havethissspretty little pattern in your palm, now would you?”

He twisted my wrist hard, almost breaking it. Paralyzed in pain, I could only scream and drop to my knees. With his other hand, he reached for my waist, ripping away my sword.

“You also wouldn’t have been armed,” the demon continued, his voice seeming more lathered and twisted.
