“A lady can’t carry a sword to protect herself amidst a war?”

The scabbard fell to the ground next to me, and shortly I felt the edge of the sword come to my throat.

“You might be more trouble than you’re worth,” the demon said. “PerhapsssI should kill you now before you try anything else.”

The blade pressed hard into my neck. I looked up into his eyes, the yellow in them glowing bright.

But he wasn’t the owner of those eyes.

“Henrik!” I called out. “Save me!”

I gasped as I felt the sword cut through the skin of my neck. My heart clenched in terror for a brief moment before I realized that the demon had let go of my hand and stumbled backward. I brought my hand to my neck on instinct, realizing that even though there was blood, the cut wasn’t deep.

When I looked back up, the yellow in Henrik’s eyes was completely gone.

Henrik huffed in pain, his sword arm dead at his side. I could now read him, the fear and anger in his eyes clear.

“What the hell are you thinking!” Henrik yelled, his voice now back to normal.

I came to my feet, keeping my hand on the cut on my neck as the blood seeped through my fingers.

“You have two choices,” I said to him. “Either you let Jacques burn the demon out of you, or the demon comes after me. Which is it?”

He forced a painful laugh. “You foolish, ridiculous woman. You knew the demon couldn’t resist that kind of offer.”

I nodded. Even though I had no intentions of letting the demon possess me, I knew he wouldn’t be able to resist the temptation. And I knew Henrik wouldn’t allow it.

“And about the Guardians,” he continued, “was that the truth?”

I nodded again. “I once was a full-blooded siren until I betrayed the king. In my jealousy and pain, I killed the Guardians. And in yours, you took on a demon.”

He blinked. His fingers slowly gripping his sword and then releasing it again.

I stepped forward, continuing. “The king, however, has given me another chance. And in return, I’m giving you one as well.”

He hesitated for a moment, then screamed as he grabbed his head in pain.

“Dammit!” he snarled, his voice halfway between normal and demonic. “You need to get out, Esmeralda!”

He slipped the Eros in his pocket, gripping on to the sword with both hands as he kept it toward the ground.

His eyes flickered yellow, then back to brown.

“You need to go,” he said again. He lifted his head to look me in the eyes, fear and pain weaved in them once more. “Because when I’m around you…I can’t decide if I’m getting stronger or weaker.”

The yellow consumed his eyes again. He held up his sword and lunged for my throat.

CHAPTER 46—POWERLESS

I dodged the blade as the demon struck for my throat.

I picked up a rock as I jumped out of the way, throwing it at the demon’s head. It stunned him just long enough for me to run to a mound of rocks and climb over. I dropped behind it, my heart lodged in my throat.

I had to stay out of his sight, or at the very least, block out the sound of his voice. The moment the demon had me in his sights and reached into his pocket, it was over.

Jacques, where are you?

“Come out, littlesssiren,” the demon hissed.
