My head snapped up. “How did you know?”

He paused, his eyes darkening.

“I didn’t.” He rolled his tongue against his cheek. “I was making a joke. I thought I was, anyway.”

He stood and stepped away from the bed toward the mirror. I held my knees as he looked at the wrap around his arm in the reflection.

“What now?” I asked to break the silence.

“A bath, maybe.”

“I meant about the Eros.”

HIs eyes met mine in the mirror. “You saw the red star. We follow it. Wherever it leads. For however long it takes.”

“And your promise?”

“What promise?” he asked coldly.

I stood from the bed, stepping toward him. “To take me back to my father.”

He smirked and shrugged. “Is the Eros in my hand? Once I have it, you can go back to your father. Maybe.”

“Then at least let me send word to him—”

“Out of the question.”

I grabbed his arm, desperation pouring from my throat. “Please, Adrian…”

The captain stopped, looking at my hand gripping his arm.

“I’m all he has left,” I whispered.

Adrian’s eyes darted around the room for a moment before he shook me off. Without a word, he walked to the other side of the room and opened the drawer to his desk. He handed me a piece of blank paper.

“Write it in your own hand then,” he said. “But leave out names and locations. Tell him you are well, and nothing else.”

Overcome with relief, I wrapped my arms around his neck and hugged him. He grunted in annoyance, but it wasn’t long before an arm snaked around my waist in return.

“You better keep your distance, princess,” he said in my ear. “Before I lose my senses to you completely.”

CHAPTER 14—TRANSPARENT

I awoke to boots stomping across the floor.

My eyes fluttered open, Adrian’s blurry room coming into view. There was a light breeze as he walked past the bed, the scent of rum and cinnamon waking me further, my eyes clearing.

Adrian removed his jacket and sat at his desk, pulling out his glasses to take a look at a pile of maps. He pulled out his compass, taking notes in a small journal. I stayed silent, unmoving, wanting to observe him longer without him knowing.

I had never seen him so focused. With the earnest focus in his eyes, it was hard to believe this was the same cocky, devil-may-care criminal who kidnapped me.

My arm ached as I stretched out. The cut in it wasn’t deep, but it stung, a terrible reminder of the things I had witnessed the night before.

“You’re awake,” Adrian said.

I sat up slowly, realizing I was in his bed again. I looked at the bedsheets, dazed.

“Did we—?” I started.
