Adrian lifted his eyes to mine, palming the compass in his hand. He shook his head. “You slept alone. Don’t get used to sleeping in my bed, though, Princess Blood. You’re still not my guest.”

His eyes turned downward, and I suddenly saw the dark circles under them.

“You didn’t sleep?” I asked, sliding off the bed.

He gave a bitter laugh, writing more notes in his journal. “I saw demons fall from the sky and attack my men. You think I could sleep after that?”

He scribbled his notes more aggressively. I stood up and approached his desk, looking over his shoulder at his notes. He spread his hand over the page, blocking my view.

“Keep away from my journals, princess. The information in them doesn’t concern you.”

I frowned. “I was just curious. No need to bite my head off.”

There was a frustrated aura around him, something heavy and hopeless.

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

“Nothing.”

“You’re lying.”

“I’m not.”

I put a hand on his shoulder. “Adrian…”

He stood, shaking off my hand and walking to the other side of the room to his shelves, his back toward me. “Don’t say my name like that. Shouldn’t you be getting breakfast ready or something?”

I gasped, a hand flying to my face as I remembered the events of the day before fully.

“Luc! Is he all right?”

Adrian shrugged. “Go see for yourself.”

I ran to the door, swinging it open. I turned my head back one more time to Adrian, watching him violently flipping pages in his book at his shelf, his lips muttering silent words to themselves.

I tapped on the door frame for his attention. “I asked if you were all right too, you know.”

He shut his book, his head rolling over his shoulder to look at me.

“Don’t worry about me,” he muttered. “We’re notarrangedto care for one another.”

I glanced at his bedsheets, eyes narrowing.

“Notarrangedto care, huh?” I asked. “Is that why you took care of me last night?”

He stopped, putting a hand on his bookshelf and dropping his head. He then looked at me with one eye narrowed as if he was trying to solve a mystery.

“I’m not suited to take care of anyone, princess. Don’t forget it.”

He turned his back on me, going back to his desk.

With nothing to say, I left him to his brooding, rushing down the stairs to find Luc in the infirmary. Out of habit of having perfect manners, I knocked on the door first.

“Come in,” a hoarse voice returned.

I threw open the door at the weak sound of his voice. He was lying on his bunk, wrapped tight in blankets, only his head and arms exposed. He turned his head toward me and gave a weak smile.

“Little dove, is that you?” he asked.
