I thought about it for a minute.

“I don’t know,” I finally said. “Of course, I want to return to my father. I hate being away from his side.”

“And your…”

He stopped, not finishing his sentence. I could swear that his face had turned pink as he looked down.

“My fiancé?” I finished, impressed he had remembered it even though I only mentioned it once or twice. “I’ve known him for ten minutes. I’m not sure how I could miss him.”

I looked out on the water, the waves slowly drifting in the moonlight, lapping against the side of the boat.

“What is it?” Henrik asked softly.

I took a deep breath. “I was starting to become fond of it.”

“What?”

“The sea.”

Henrik’s eyebrows lifted. “You’re not sick of sailing?”

I shook my head with a smile. “I think this is the most at peace I’ve felt in a while. There are no businessmen to impress, no standards I have to meet. It’s just me and the ocean, and any adventure I should want.”

Henrik stepped in closer, but I kept my eyes on the water.

“Do you want to stay with us?” he asked.

I turned toward him. He didn’t back down, looking down into my eyes as he waited for my answer.

The problem was that I didn’t know what it was.

“Henrik!” a voice shouted from the crow’s nest. “We have trouble!”

Henrik turned toward the sea just as the shadow of a ship floated into the moonlight, fire burning from torches on the deck.

Henrik growled.

“What is it?” I asked.

“A signal,” Henrik replied. “We’re being attacked.”

CHAPTER 16—RESCUE

“Prepare cannons!” Henrik yelled.

The men went to their stations, unsheathing their swords in anticipation. In organized chaos, everyone went to their posts preparing for the worst. There was one face I didn’t see, however. One thatshouldhave been leading the crew.

I rushed to Adrian’s room, throwing the door open. He looked up from his desk, raising an eyebrow.

“What in th—”

“Get your ass out here and be captain!” I yelled.

He grunted and stood from his desk. “You really don’t have—”

“We’re being attacked,” Henrik boomed over my shoulder, making me jump. “Pirates.”

“Pirates?” I asked. “Aren’t you—”
