I stopped, remembering Henrik’s response to the wordpiratethe last time I had used it.

“Realpirates,” Henrik replied after I had stopped myself. “The kind of no honor and no mercy.”

He looked at Adrian, his eyes burning.

“Then let’s go defend your precious king,” Adrian snarled back. “And the ship I stole from him.”

Adrian grabbed a knife and headed toward the door.

“Taking a knife to a sword fight?” Henrik asked as we followed him.

Adrian turned, opening his coat pocket to reveal a pistol and a small collection of throwing knives.

“These are all I need,” he replied.

Adrian rushed onto the deck, the wind whipping through his hair as his eyes darkened. Henrik and I followed, looking at the ship as it came closer and closer to ours.

“It’s going to hit us!” I cried.

“That’s the idea,” Henrik replied flatly.

“Don’t let them see you bleed, gentlemen!” Adrian commanded, flicking his knife with his wrist. “Give them the proper welcome. Allow no survivors. Understand?”

The crew cheered. Henrik stood silent beside me, watching his brother.

It seemed the self-proclaimed pirate captain could, in fact, be serious. It also seemed that when he was, it was deadly.

Adrian took off toward the bow, jumping onto the ledge as he watched the enemy ship. The ship wasn’t quick, but it was sailing straight toward us, its sails looming as tall as ours in the moonlight.

Not looking away from the ship, Adrian pointed straight at me.

“Get her someplace safe,” he commanded.

Henrik grabbed my arm, but I stopped him.

“What are you doing?” I asked. “Let me stay with you. I can help, can’t I?”

Henrik hesitated, staring at me blankly.

“Get her out of here!” Adrian commanded again.

Henrik shook his head as if there was water in it, then pulled at my arm again.

“You’re too valuable,” he whispered, taking me down to the kitchen.

He pulled me down the steps, shoving me at Luc. Luc invited me with open arms into a hug as I collided into him.

“Come to visit me during off hours?” he asked playfully, his arms wrapped around me.

“Pirate attack,” Henrik said.

“Ah, then am I to play bodyguard? How adorable.”

Henrik tightened his jaw, glancing once between us and then heading back up toward the stairs. Luc smiled at me.

“Time to hide,” he said, motioning to the storage room.

“You’re far too calm about this, Luc.”
