“Luc!” I cried, stepping forward to get to him.

The man stepped between us. “I need you to come with me.”

“The hell I will!”

I reached back and took some eggs from the hen’s nest, pegging him in the face with it. He cried and stumbled back, trying to get the oozing yolk out of his eye. I grabbed the sword from his hand pointing it at him while he was distracted.

“Step back!” I commanded.

He raised his hands as he stepped backward. “Listen—”

“No! Step back and get away from him!”

He did as he was told. I turned toward Luc, my sword still pointed at the stranger. I walked backward until I was at Luc’s side. Luc was panting, but his eyes were blinking.

“Are you all right?” I asked.

He gave a breathy laugh. “I am now. Who knew you’d be my rescuer, little dove?”

He waved his fingers at me, motioning for the sword. I handed it to him, and he came back to his feet to face the man once more.

“I’m afraid I can’t let you take her,” Luc said coolly. “She means too much to me.”

My heart fluttered at his words.

“She means a lot more to my employer,” the man returned.

Employer?

Before I could ask any questions, Luc’s hand struck out and grabbed my wrist.

“Get off the ship,” he whispered.

“What?”

I heard, but I didn’t understand.

“Don’t let them take you,” he said, his voice more urgent. “Get off the ship.”

“Luc—”

“Go!”

His command had never been so strong. All I could do was obey.

I ran up the stairs, Luc close behind me, his back facing mine as he pointed his sword at the pirate below. At the top of the stairs, I held my breath again.

Bodies were littered across the deck, blood staining almost every floorboard. The sight was horrific, but the smell of iron and blood was much worse. I barely had enough time to be nauseous when two men barreled toward us, swords drawn. Lucjumped in front of me, quickly slicing both of them open. He held his arm out to guard me, sword raised.

“Keep going!” Luc said, backing me toward the tail of the ship, away from the fight.

Cannons fired. I threw my hands above my head, throwing myself to the ground in fear as the ship lurched from side to side. My limbs shook as my covered my head. Luc pulled me back to my feet, consoling me as he pulled me farther down the ship.

More men came for us both as we made our way toward the back of the ship. Luc kicked his boot into one attacker and sliced him, then elbowed the other in the face and sent him over the boat into the water.

The men swarmed us, Luc still standing in front of me as a guard. No one moved in immediately as they slowly backed us into the corner.

“Give us the girl,” one of them commanded.
