“You don’t want to do this,” Luc replied, his voice in a nonchalant sing-song as always.

My back hit the rail of the ship, the black water directly below me.

“Luc…” I said.

“Do you trust me, dove?” he said over his shoulder.

“Of course, but—”

With a single move, he turned and shoved me off the side of the ship.

The water hit hard, sucking me down into the black sea. I came to the surface for a quick burst of air, before the waves pulled me down once more. I opened my eyes, searching the surface until I saw moonlight.

Fingers wrapped around my ankles.

I was pulled down farther, unable to kick back to the surface. Fear struck my throat. The fingers released.

Suddenly, two pearls were floating in front of me.

No, not pearls. Eyes.

White eyes made of pearls.

They blinked, a sudden shimmer surrounding it. It looked like scales of a fish as it glistened, but fingers came to its face like a human.

It reached for me. I screamed, the water engulfing the sound.

The creature grabbed my face with what might have been hands, silently demanding that I look at it. I could only stare in horror. It, in turn, blinked. Then a black hole opened in the scales. A mouth?

I was launched back to the surface. The water split apart as I broke through. I became weightless, high above the ocean. I flew past one of the top sails, gasping for air as I plummeted back down to the water in a scream.

I hit the water harder than the first time, opening my eyes to be greeted by the creature once more. It blinked, cocking its head to the side.

The water split, another body landing beside us. There was a hiss in the water, and the creature of glittering scales turned to dust, shimmering like stars as its remnants surrounded me. Another hand grabbed me, bringing me back to the surface.

I found myself caught in someone’s arms, his hard grip around me familiar.

“I told you I’d come get you,” Captain Adrian said proudly.

He moved the wet hair out of my face, a warm smile coming to his lips.

“No one takes my hostage, hostage,” he said.

I wrapped my arms around his neck, shivering. “Adrian. What was that…?”

“I’m no expert on the spirit realm, but considering it combusted from this holy stone knife I made last week, I’m guessing it’s a siren.”

“Aren’t sirens the ones with wings?”

He shrugged. “Whatever. Let’s get you back on deck before I have to stab anything else.”

He grabbed hold of a rope hanging off the side of the ship and smiled as we were pulled back onboard. The crew pulled us up, cheering as we both landed on the deck together. Adrian laughed and flashed me a smile, and I couldn’t help but flash one in return.

Maybe he wasn’t so bad.

He came to his feet, helping me up. With his usual arrogance, he turned back to the ship, which had now gone quiet.

He stepped forward to a line of men with their arms twisted behind their backs, many of them bleeding. All of them kept a defiant look on their faces, not daring to show any weakness to the captain.
