“McDonald’s or Taco Time?” I ask.
“What? You don’t need to get me food.”
“I missed lunch because I had to stalk you, and I’m hungry.”
“You didn’t have to stalk me; youchoseto.”
“Whatever. And I can hear your stomach. So which one? Hurry up, we’re getting close. Don’t be that person who can’t pick a place to eat when—”
“McDonald’s,” she says, and I swing into the parking lot.
There’s no one in line; we both order Big Macs, fries, and giant sodas, and I watch Ally practically inhale hers as we drive back to school.
“Now you know more things about me—things Darci doesn’t know. You have more to add to that list you made,” she says.
“Yeah, I do.”
“So, on a scale of one to ten, how disappointed are you now?” she asks.
“I thought you were hooking up with Trevor.”
“What?”
“When I started following you, I thought I was about to catch you fucking around with Trevor. That would have been far more disappointing.”
“Would it really?”
“One hundred percent, yes,” I tell her.
She laughs and shakes her head.
“So…tattoos, huh?”
“Yep,” she says, finishing off her sandwich.
“What would you do to me?”
She smiles. “You mean like…if I could tattoo you?”
“Yeah.”
“I don’t know. I’ll have to think about that and get back to you.”
“You do that.”
We pull into the school parking lot a few minutes later. I put the car in park, and Ally goes for her door handle.
“Wait,” I say. “You can’t steal from people anymore, Ally.”
She shakes her head. “I told you—I need money.”
“We’ll figure something else out. You said you don’t want to hurt people. That hurts people, Ally. And you could get caught. I mean, I caught you. Someone else is going to, too, and then what?”
“No one watches me like you do.”
“They don’t have to; it wasn’t that hard. Do you have a backup plan for when they figure out that a bunch of kids are getting robbed at school?”
“I usually just do it at other schools. Or I look through cars, but yeah. I have a backup plan.”
