I approach his desk after the bell rings and the room empties.

“Hey, can you tell me what I have in this class?” I ask. “I want to know if the extra credit will be worth my time or not.”

“Sure,” he says. “But I’m pretty sure you’re fine.”

“Yeah, well,” I say as he turns to his computer. “I’m ranked third in our class. There’s a difference between an ‘A’ and an ‘A-’ for me.”

I lean in as much as I can without making it obvious and focus as he types his password. It’s easier than expected because he doesn’t set down the Monster energy drink in his left hand and just kind of pokes at the keys with his right.

Bigdick79!

Are you fucking kidding me?

I run my hands over my face and cover my mouth to help hold in a laugh.

“Let’s see…West…” he says. “You have a 98.2.”

“Thanks,” I tell him with the most ridiculous and seemingly unwarranted smile on my face before turning and going for the door.

Doesn’t he know the administrators can probably see his password? Fucking embarrassing regardless. Still, I hope he’s stupid enough to use the same password for everything.

Later, I walk into the cafeteria, grab my tray, sit at the usual table, and scan the room for Ally like I always do.

“Looking for your secret girlfriend?” Isaac asks.

I swear this mother fucker still thinks I’m making it up.

“Yes,” I reply curtly.

“I saw her duck into the gym on my way here,” he says.

I eat the rest of my pizza in three bites and leave the table.

“Hey, you’re welcome, you fucking dick!” he yells at my back.

“Thanks,” I tell him, flipping him off over my shoulder so he knows I’m sincere.

I toss my tray through the window and head down the hallway to the gym. I walk through the doors and then back behind the bleachers.

She’s there, sleeping on her track bag.

She found a place to sleep.

I want to lie down next to her, wrap my arms around her, and hold her like I’m never able to, but I stop myself a couple of feet away.

“Allyson?”

Her eyes flutter open, and she turns and looks up at me.

“I didn’t want to wake you up, but I know I’m supposed to announce my presence first, so I’m doing that now.”

“I’m sorry I yelled at you,” she says.

“Well, technically, you whispered at me. But itwasa harsh tone.”

Now, I do lie next to her; I wrap my arms around her and pull her back against my chest.

“Are you mad at me?”
