“Nothing,” she says. “Just…regular couple stuff.”
I turn away and shake my head, trying to hide my own smile.
“Those girls asked for my phone number, and I had to tell them I don’t have a phone,” she says, then laughs again. Hard. Way too hard.
Uh oh. I may be in trouble here.
“They were so confused,” she adds. “Devon!”
“What?”
“Let’s go swimming!Realswimming.”
“Not tonight, baby. Maybe some other time.”
“You’re always mean,” she pouts.
“Literally the opposite is true, but that’s fine.”
It’s at this point I realize that maybe I should have watched her a little better. It seems like those last few shots really did her in.
“Devon, I want to drive. Can I drive?”
“Fuck no, you can’t!” I tell her. “There’s some water bottles on the floor in the back, Ally. You need to drink some water.”
She unbuckles her seatbelt, turns around, and tumbles head-first into the back of the car.
I laugh for a few seconds before I realize…I’m in deep shit.
“Why did you do that!?” she asks when she pops back up.
“I didn’t do anything! Ally, seriously. Get a water, then get back up here and buckle your seatbelt before I get pulled over.”
“I can’t!” she says.
Shit.
I turn down a quiet street and find a place to park the car, then I go to the back, open the door, and buckle my girlfriend back in the front.
“Drink the water and stay in your seat, Ally. I’m serious.”
I close the door, shake my head, and silently degrade myself as I return to the driver’s side and climb into the car.
“Devon?”
“Yeah?”
“I don’t want to go home,” she says. She chokes on the words just a little, and it’s enough to tear me apart.
I sigh. “I know, baby. It won’t be much longer, I promise. I’ve gotit figured out.”
“You keep saying that,” she says. “I don’t know what that means.”
“I’ll tell you soon, okay?”
She doesn’t answer, and when I look over a minute later, she’s asleep.
Once we’re back in Ally’s neighborhood, I park slightly closer to her house than she’d normally want me to, but far enough away that the camera won’t see us. I walk around to the passenger side, open the door, and wake her up.
