I’ve always wondered if humans can turn into stone. Now I know, that they can. I go numb, and the whole table stares at us.

”No. That would be inappropriate,” Frau Falther chuckles. ”She’s nobody important. She’s just the assistant.”

”Thought we said the more the merrier?” Hendryk replies and to my detriment he grabs my wrist. ”Come on, sit down. Grab yourself some food and something to drink.”

I frantically shake my head, wondering why he’s pushing.

”Hendryk no,” I whisper under my breath, squirming and I’ve never been more ashamed in my life. Panic flares in me when he doesn’t let go.

Letting out a pant, I lock eyes with him in shock and only when he registers the vulnerability does he release me. I tremble as I help serve the other guests but I can feel Hendryk’s eyes follow me around the table. They burn like an ice storm, making my cheeks feel fuzzy.

I glance at Hendryk, flashing a small smile to let him know that everything’s okay. I don’t want to sit with them and I’m not hungry anyway. He shrugs and I’m relieved that he’s not causing a scene.

Taking a sip of his sparkling water, he picks up his utensils. ”So?” he says and throws a sly look around the table. ”Have you read any decent erotica lately?”

Good gravy, I can’t be in here!

Cutting through the kitchen, I grab a bottle then hurry out to the balcony. I sit there, sipping on wine while watching the glimmering skyscrapers. They’ve replaced the stars but they’re not too bad, and they distract me from what’s going on inside. Besides, even the sirens are better than the stuff that’s playing in there.

I take another sip, more than tipsy now and I scissor my legs. Rolling my arms up over my head, I take a deep breath and try to pinch the moon between my fingers when I hear shuffling behind me.

Hendryk steps out on the balcony, the moment I look over my shoulder. His eyes are intent, sparkling like the 4th of July. I stir, feeling like something sexual just happened even though nothing did.

”Hey stranger,” I pant, as the alcohol goes to my head. ”You shouldn’t be out here.”

”There’s a lot of things I shouldn’t do,” he smiles walking over to me and I lean against the railing. ”Is this where you’ve been hiding all night?”

Nodding, I say, ”Just me and my bestie, Merlot.” I hold up the bottle and take another sip. ”Want some?”

”I told you I don’t drink,” he replies in a flat tone and I flash him a sheepish smile. ”Are you drunk?” He leans forward and I realize too late he’s trying to smell my breath. ”Fuck, yeah you are. Give me that.”

He takes the bottle from me, putting it down while I blink at him and in the stupor I fail to register how close we are. How his slow intensity isn’t so slow anymore, but electric.

”You’ve been pretty bad yourself tonight,” I slur. ”But luckily Frau isn’t that perceptive.”

”Neither are you in this state?” he says with a miserable groan. ”Can’t you tell I’m trying to kiss you?”

I gawk and my head feels too heavy for my neck. I roll it around, then kick out with my foot. Hendryk frowns, looking down.

”What are you doing?”

”You’re pulling my leg aren’t you?” I slur, then snigger and face-plant against his shoulder.

He sighs and clasps my jawline in his hands, trying to bore his eyes into mine but right now everything’s about as clear as a crystal ball. To make me look at him, he fists my hair, his fingertips digging deliciously into my scalp and I let out a needy moan.

”I’d like to seize those lips” he rasps softly, ”if you could come to your senses for two seconds.” Something flares in his eyes. ”Or maybe I should just take advantage of you. Kiss you and warm my cock in you at the same time?”

”It’s a cold night,” I breathe, feeling feverish and nauseous and I’m not sure what I’m agreeing to. I wiggle. ”Please…help yourself.”

”Do you insist?”

I lean my head back, opening up my thighs, offering.”Yours,” I gasp. ”Nice and hot, just the way you like it.”

The nerves in my lower belly twist into a maze.

A heavy pant escapes me, my breath coating the air and Hendryk tenses. There’s a sound in the air, a growl or snarl of some kind and it mixes with sound from the traffic.

Then I hear someone call Hendryk’s name from faraway. It’s the other guests and I feel hands clamp harshly around my thighs, closing them and Hendryk walks away.
