I grin and turn to her. “Did you see me ride Diablo? Did you see Diablo protect me?”

“What I saw was a maniac try to attack you.” She crosses her arms over her chest. “We should take this to the Dean.”

“Not yet.”

“Why? You’re asking for trouble by not saying anything,” she warns.

“Maybe, but I want to talk to Dafni and understand what her beef is with me. She at least owes me that. If I get her in the office with the Dean, she’ll label me a pussy and will never stop tormenting me.” The wind blows and the air feels nice against my skin. A few strands of my hair tickle my face and I pull them behind my ears.

“Well,” Evie starts. “Whatever you need me to do, I’ll do it. I’ll always be here to have your back. Unless I’m on mine with my feet to the sky!”

I laugh out loud. “You’re too much sometimes. Let’s go, I’m starved.”

As I walk away from the class with Evie, I can’t help but wonder what other adventures lay ahead. But for now, I’m content to bask in the glory of my victory over Diablo and having Shayde again by my side.

CHAPTER5

Enteringthe mess hall never ceases to surprise me. Seeing creatures of all types still takes my breath away. It seems like just yesterday I saw my first monster. Considering I’ve been here a year doesn’t help. Regardless, Evie and I make our way toward the food line. It’s Wednesday, burgers and shakes day—my favorite day of the week.

Some of the year one students working in the cafeteria dress up 1950’s style and I’m here for it. I love the poodle skirts, especially seeing them on monsters who have tails.

The room itself is quite large. It holds most of the academy at any given time during this hour. As adults, you’d think we would be on better behavior than high school kids. Yeah right, one would hope.

There are tables for jocks, the preps, the nerdy geeky ones, the gothic emo clique, and then those who keep their noses in books. I haven’t figured out where Evie and I belong, other than sitting with the necromancers and natural spell casters. They hate the use of the wordwitchso we don’t use it. As for anything Wiccan… well, we don’t use that word, either. We’re either mancers or casters. One can control spirits and raise the dead where the other can conjure pretty much anything.

Then there’s the special in-between variant that teeters between both. This type cannot only raise the dead but can conjure all the elements around them. No one has ever met one before, and this type has been dubbed “the wicked.”

The reason for the name?

Anyone who could possibly do all things would have to be nothing less than wicked.

As we stand in line to pick up our food for the afternoon, I feel my stomach growl with hunger pains. I guess this is what I get for only having tea for breakfast.

“Hmm, look over there.” Evie nudges me.

I follow her line of sight and find Shayde with a group of fellow monsters. He chuckles about something and his smile is simply irresistible. Regardless of how frightening he appears to be, he’s tragically beautiful.

“Oh,” Evie gasps and grabs at my arm. “There he is,” she whispers.

“There who is,” I ask. There are seven or eight male species standing and sitting together eating and I’m not sure who she’s pointing to.

“I don’t know his name, but the one with silvery white hair,” she answers.

That doesn’t really help because Shayde also has silvery white hair. So do a few of the winged guys and a man with the body of a snake.

I cross my arms over my chest and tilt my head slightly. “Be more specific.”

She groans. “The snake body guy. Come on, Teagan,” she whines.

“Sorry,” I say under my breath. I find the guy she’s spying on and lean over. “I believe the term is Naga.”

“Naga,” she repeats. “Hmm, okay. I wonder if he wants to be called a Naga or just by his name?”

I shrug. “No idea until you ask him. Oh, and his name. You know, rather than being a stalker?” I grin and step forward in line.

The lunch lady hands over a tray with open-faced buns. I accept it and smile at her. “Thank you.”

She nods and hands a tray to Evie.
