But he doesn’t. The unicorn stops trying to take me down and focuses his attention now on Dafni. I’m rubbing my arm to stop the pulsing ache when he takes off in a gallop.

“Shit,” I squeak, and grab a hold of his mane and the saddle.

“Stop him,” I hear.

“Pull the reins,” comes the voice of someone else.

“Move out of the way, Dafni,” comes another.

Has Diablo sensed my distress and changed his tactics?

Or is he protecting himself?

I have no idea what’s happening, but I hold on tight as Diablo continues forward.

Dafni tries to whip at him again, but this time, Diablo’s ready. He lowers his head and charges directly for her, and Dafni’s unicorn rears up in fear.

I manage to stay on Diablo’s back as he circles around Dafni and her unicorn. “What are you trying to do, get me killed,” I scream at her.

“You don’t belong here,” she answers.

Diablo makes a stabbing motion at Dafni’s leg. Her unicorn bucks. She screams and holds on tight.

“What’s the meaning of this,” calls out the professor.

Dafni retreats with the distraction of Professor Wright, and I breathe a sigh of relief as she and her unicorn disappear. Diablo stands perfectly still. I glance down at the unicorn that now seems perfectly tame. He nods his head up and down as if saying, “Yes, I win, you bitch.”

At least, I hope that’s what the unicorn is thinking.

Hesitantly, I begin to smooth my palm across his neck. When he doesn’t attempt to unalive me again, I lean forward and scratch up around his ears.

“Thank you,” I whisper to him. “Thank you for protecting me and yourself. I don’t know why she hates me so much, but thank you.”

Shayde approaches with the professor, a look of concern on the dark elf’s face. “Are you all right,” he asks me.

I nod, although I’m still shaking from the adrenaline of the encounter. “I’m fine. Thanks to Diablo here. I hope this means we’re friends now,” I say, looking at the dark unicorn with a newfound respect. I run my hand down the sheen of his neck. The sun glimmers off his body, highlighting his almost bluish hue.

Shayde smiles. “You did well. Not many can handle a dark unicorn like that. Especially, while being attacked.”

“I did do good, huh?” I grin, and slide off the unicorn’s body. The moment my feet hit the ground, Diablo rears, then bucks. I sidestep to avoid getting hit. “So much for making a connection.”

“Don’t worry about it. He’ll remember you when you return,” he reassures me.

I did feel a bond with him, and I know that I would never forget the thrill of riding him and what we went through together today. One of the class assistants takes Diablo’s reins and leads him away. The dark unicorn looks back over his shoulder to where I stand and our eyes meet for the briefest of moments. His eyes narrow for a moment and I’m not sure if his distress is meant for me or something else.

I’ll have to take it at face value that our time together meant something when he protected us. Or maybe he just protected himself and I was along for the ride… literally.

“Do you have any idea what Dafni’s issue is with me,” I ask Shayde, centering my attention back on him.

“No idea,” he replies. I see Evie running toward me as he continues. “I need to go help the others. Again, you did good today. If you need ice, you can get it in the cafeteria or the infirmary.”

“Hey,” Evie exclaims. She looks between Shayde and I a few times. “Are you all right?”

I nod. “I’ll be fine.”

Shayde waves his goodbye and I can’t take my gaze off his backside. For a monster, the man is so fucking hot.

“Earth to Teagan…” Evie snaps her fingers in my face.
