Have I done something wrong?

Why do they want to see me?

Have they found out who I am?

My background or heritage?

Is she related to Dafni Frangidi?

How many people have that last name?

“Teagan,” Evie asks. “What’s in the letter? Can you share it?”

I glance at her, then back at the note. It doesn’t state to come alone, so I hand it over to my best friend. She reads it over and glances at me over the top of it.

“Umm, what did you do to get their attention,” she asks.

“I wish I knew,” I answer, then add, “I have no idea what they want.”

Flinging my covers back, I get out of bed and make my way to the bathroom. I need to clean up and get a message to Shayde about this note and seeing the leaders.

Can I use the shadows to send the message?

Probably not.

It’ll have to be the old-fashioned way.

“I need to clean up.” I run my fingers through my hair and hiss at a gnarly tangle near the back of my head. “Would you please go and let Shayde know? I want you both there with me when I attend.”

She nods. “Sure thing, but will the council allow a dark elf inside?”

I shrug. “Guess we’ll find out.”

A few hours later,Shayde, Evie, and I step through the portal and stand before the building of the Necromantic Leaders. I stare up at it in awe and fear. As much as I love what this building and community stands for, I also detest the ruin and corruption it’s fallen into.

From the outside, the place appears to be an ordinary red-bricked building, however, that’s only the glamour. Behind the mystique is an old house, two stories with widow peaks and an aged wrap around porch.

It doesn’t belong in the downtown district near Northumberland Island, but this is also what makes it work.

We take the steps up to the door and I reach to knock when the door opens on its own accord.

“Creepy,” Evie whispers.

“Yup,” I agree.

Pushing the door open, I cross the threshold with one foot. Leaning around the door, I look inside before stepping in fully.

There’s a hanging chandelier above where I stand and a black marble floor with gold woven through it like bolts of lightning. The flooring is gorgeous and I almost do not want to enter to avoid walking on it.

On one side is a coat rack and the other are windows to the outside courtyard. The three of us collect ourselves and I see a welcome desk at the other end of the house. As I start toward it, the door slams closed and I almost scream with a start.

“What the fuck,” I whisper. Turning back to the direction of the desk, I yelp and fall back against Shayde.

A woman, tall and slender, with long raven black hair and violet eyes stares down her slanted nose at me. “May I help you?”

“Wow, where did you come from,” I ask and right myself. “You weren’t here a second ago.”
