“I was,” she corrected. “You just didn’t see me. Now, I’ll ask you again, may I help you?”

The tone of her question comes across more like, “Who are you,” not, “may I help you.”

I fish the letter from my purse and hand it over. “I was asked to come here.”

She snatches the parchment and opens it. She scans it and then her gaze darts to mine. “I see, Miss Osborn. This way, please,” she instructs, turns on her heel, and walks in the opposite direction.

“Who are you?” I clear my throat and try again. “Umm, I mean, what is this place and where are you taking us?”

“You know you’re in the Council of Leaders building, child,” the woman responds as her heels strike the marble floor.

Well, yeah, of course we are.

“As for who I am, I’m Angela Taylor, necromancer,” she answers. “One of the Council Leaders.” She continues down the corridor until we reach a closed door. She fishes out a strange looking key that resembles an actual skeleton key. It’s bone white in color and the key portion of it is sharpened to a point.

The lock clicks when she turns the key in the lock.

“How many leaders are there,” I ask.

Angela doesn’t answer. She pushes the door open and on the other side it is completely different from the house we’re in now. My mouth drops open and I walk inside, blown away by the change in scenery.

We step into an oversized room, but it’s not just a room, it’s an outdoor garden. The left wall is a waterfall with a koi pond. The right is a library of books that seems to go on for miles. The ceiling is completely missing as the sun shines in on the grounds. The lawn is not the same as it was out front. This is like stepping into a different realm.

“Where are we,” Shayde asks.

I look around, curious if whoever owns this place read all the books on the shelves. “I wish I knew.”

Angela turns to face us. “You two must wait here. The invite is for Teagan only.”

I can feel my anger rise. I’m annoyed at the idea of not having those I trust most by my side. “The invite didn’t state it was for only me. Evie is also a necromancer. She belongs here as much as I do.”

“No,” the woman states flatly. “Now, let’s go.” She continues down a cobblestone path to another closed door. She glances back at me and raises a single brow.

I look from Evie to Shayde and shake my head. “I won’t do this without either of you.”

“You have to,” Evie insists. “They might give you the answers we’ve been looking for.”

“She’s right,” Shayde agrees. “We’ll be right here when you return. I promise.” He cups my face and tilts my head up, then presses his lips to my forehead. “Now, go.”

“Fine,” I state, feeling like a child. “But I don’t like it.” I have an idea, but I’m not sure Shayde will agree to it. “Can you listen in with the shadows, or maybebein there in the shadows?”

He nods once. “I’ll see what I can do.”

That’s all I need. I turn on the ball of my foot and head toward Angela. Making it to her side, I glance back to Shayde and Evie. He once again nods and I return it.

Angela opens the door and on the other side I see four people sitting behind a table with a fifth open seat. I assume the empty space is for Angela. She closes the door behind us and locks it.

I whip around and face it in time to see it fade into the wall, disappearing.

How the fuck will Shayde shadow into the room?

Angela takes the seat at the end of the table and her chair scratches across the tile floor. Stepping further inside, I’m scared of the unknown. I have no idea where I am or what will happen.

Left to right, the names in front of each person read Davanna Frangidi–Council Elder, Cameron Howard–Council Leader, Axel Moses–Council Leader, Carleigh Swanson–Council Leader, and finally, Angela Taylor–Council Leader.

“Hello, Miss Osborn,” Davanna Frangidi states. “Thank you for coming to us on such short notice.”

So, she must be the leader of everyone here. “You didn’t give me much choice in the matter. What is it I can do for you?” I study her face for a moment while the woman gazes at her peers before she begins. I don’t see many similarities between her and Dafni, other than regal bitch.
