“Maybe I like to sniff out my next prey before I pounce, pussycat,” he challenges, and just as I’m about to push him away, a very dangerous, very sexy growl emits from him.

He leans down a little closer and says, “Close your mouth unless you plan to catch flies with it open.” He releases me and spins on his foot, heading down the hallway.

I finally breathe and stumble back a few steps.

Who the fuck is that?

Who does he think he is talking to me that way?

He doesn’t know me!

But damn… I want to get to know him!

“Hey, bestie,” Evie says as she comes up next to me, and slips her arm around mine. “Ready for class? Earth to bestie, hello bestie!”

“What?” I look at her and shake my head. “I just met the strangest, yet, most frighteningly beautiful man of my life. And I think he’s a student here.”

“Ooh,” she whispers. “Maybe he has a friend!”

“Come on, we’re going to be late for class. The Study of Ancient Runes is just down the hall.”

Evie and I try our best to ensure we have all our classes together. We’re both necromancers so it wouldn’t be too difficult to imagine we’d be too far apart.

As we make our way down the corridor, something unusual catches my eye and I do a double take.

“Is that a… a snake?” I tilt my head and watch the green mass slither down the hall, but the mass isn’t a snake. Well, it is, but it’s attached to the body of a man. Like a centaur but a snake. Upper body is man, lower is the serpent.

“I wonder where his dick hides,” Evie announces, almost too loud.

I gasp. “Are you kidding me right now? Shut up!” I shove her toward the classroom and feel the rush of embarrassment hot against my cheeks. “You can’t say stuff like that in the hall!”

“Oh,” she grins. “Whoopsie. Was Ithatloud?”

“Uhh, yeah,” I exclaim in a whisper. I shake my head at her and take a seat near the middle of class.

It’s somewhat full and there are books already on the desks. There are symbols across the front and I have no idea what it reads. The door to the room closes and when I look up, I have a brief moment of worry it’ll be the monster guy I ran into moments ago.

Thankfully, it’s not; the teacher closed the door. Professor Ian Scottsdale. The professor looks tired. There’s no other way to put it. He pulls out his desk chair and plops down, then pulls out a book. He slowly opens it, then begins to drone on about the importance of runes.

Oh my gods, he will put me to sleep.

“The front of your textbook reads, “The Ancient Power of Runes and Its History,” but you wouldn’t know that, being new to my class.” He laughs softly to himself, then holds up a finger. “A little rune humor. What did the Viking say after he’d added symbols to his axe? Oh no, I’veruinedit.” Once again, the professor chuckles to himself and this time he adds a snort.

This makes me smile. Maybe this class won’t be so bad after all.

Then the professor begins speaking again and the man starts with the history of runes. His voice is dry, almost monotone.

I don’t know… maybe my first impression of liking this class was wrong.

How will I learn if I’m constantly trying to keep myself awake?

“Sometimes there are creatures with runes on their bodies,” I hear him say, and this catches my attention.

“The runes can be used as a source of power.” He runs his palm over his forearm and continues. “Think of it like an extra aid in battle.”

I shoot my hand in the air before I realize what I’m doing.

He sees me and nods. “Yes, miss?”
