“Got it. Thanks man,” I drawl. I move past him, opting to go straight across the street to the motel rather than going backaround the long way. Sure, it’ll effectively blow this guy’s cover for any of my pack members loitering outside, but that’s not my problem.

“I’ll leave you to it,” I say, glancing back at Luke over my shoulder. “Try to be a little more aware of your surroundings, huh? There are wolves out in these woods.” I wink, turning to face ahead and striding away, whistling as I open up my messenger app and start a text thread to Lo. Or, as I now have her saved in my phone, Ojos Azules.Blue eyes.

Javi:Hey there, stalker girl. We didn’t get enough time together last night. When can I see you again?

Within seconds, the little grey bubble pops up indicating that she’s typing out a reply, the three dots within it moving up and down. I watch my phone screen intently as I await her response, emerging from the trees and crossing the road to the motel.

Lo:How did you get my number? Who’s the stalker now?

I chuckle to myself as I read it, pausing when I hit the front lot of the motel to type out my reply.

Javi:Agree to meet me again tonight and I’ll tell you.

She takes even longer with her next response, and I watch the screen in suspended anticipation as I saunter in the direction of my motel room door.

Lo:Cabin 12. Dusk.

My lips spread into a wide grin.

Javi:See you then, babe.

“Dang, you must’ve gotten some good news.”

I jerk my head up at the sound of Chey’s voice, finding her standing right in my path. She tips her head toward my phone. “What’s got you smiling like that? Did the six-pack council make their decision?”

“Nah, I was told it’d be at least a couple weeks,” I say, quickly sliding my phone into my pocket and changing the damn subject before she presses me further. “How was the trip to Breckenridge yesterday?”

“Uneventful,” she sighs, blowing a stray strand of hair out of her face.

“Any luck with those freelancing gigs?” I start forward again and she falls into pace with me, walking alongside me toward the front of the motel.

“One of them seemed promising, though of course it’s the one that pays the worst,” she says with a wry chuckle. Then she abruptly stops, setting her hand on my arm and turning toward me, dropping her voice low. “Hey, heads up, your mom was looking for you last night when I got back.”

“I was out doing recon,” I reply instantly, my lie already locked and loaded.

“That’s exactly what I told her.”

“Good.”

Chey tugs her lower lip between her teeth, searching my face. “You’d better get your story straight before you see her.”

I arch a brow in question. “What do you mean?”

“Javier, I’ve known you for my entire life,” Chey sighs, her hand on my arm giving it a little squeeze. “Something’s clearly goingon, and I’m not gonna ask since I respect your privacy, but there’s only so much interference I can run with D. You know how she is.”

I suck in a breath through my teeth, digging my fingers into my hair as I glance toward the door of my mom’s motel room. “Yeah, okay.” I turn my gaze on Chey, registering the smug smirk curling her lips. “Wait, how’d you know something was going on?”

“I didn’t,” she admits with a wink. “You just told me.”

“Sneak,” I grumble.

“Liar.”

I bump my shoulder into hers playfully and take another step forward, then stop in my tracks, turning back toward Cheyenne. “Think you can cover for me again tonight?” I ask hesitantly, sure to keep my voice low enough that nobody else can hear.

She rolls her eyes, folding her arms over her chest as she considers. “You’re gonna tell me all about it eventually, right?”

“You know I will.”
