He doesn’t even finish that sentence before he’s slamming his lips against mine, like he can’t go another second without kissing me. It’s harsh and demanding, desperate and possessive, and I forget myself for a moment and just sink into it, my lips moving against his, hands pressed firmly against his hard chest.

Javi’s arm winds around my waist to pull me tighter to him and he starts to walk us backwards, away from the door as he tilts his head to deepen the kiss.

I’m so lost in it that I don’t even hear the door opening behind me. I barely register the pop of a gun before a sharp zing of pain pierces my left shoulder blade, my lips leaving Javi’s as I jolt back with a gasp of shock.

“Well done, Javi,” a female voice says flatly.

I reach over my shoulder as I whip around, fingers closing around something protruding from it as pain radiates from the spot, spreading out like wildfire. My eyes land upon a petite dark-haired woman- the one Liv identified from the surveillance photo- right as I yank it out and bring it down in front of me, unfurling my hand to see a small dart resting in my palm.

Jerking my head back up in alarm, I meet the woman’s gaze, belatedly realizing that she’s entered the room flanked by two large men.

Delilah.

That’s what Liv said her name was, and that she was a shadow pack loyalist.

I shrink back a step on instinct, bumping into Javi’s chest with a little yelp. His hands land upon my shoulders, fingers closing around them firmly as Delilah’s eyes lift above me to meet his.

“Your father would be proud,” she says, her icy tone like claws raking down my spine.

Or is that sensation from whatever was in the dart she just shot me with? Ithurts; sharp pinpricks of pain are spreading throughmy body at a rapid rate, my wolf whining in dismay as she starts to fade into the recesses of my mind.

“I… I….” my brain suddenly feels sluggish as I spin back to face Javi, confusion pinching my features. “I thought you said you didn’t know your father?”

His eyes bore into mine, dark and endless and completely devoid of their usual warmth. “I said I’d never met him, not that I don’t know who he is,” he murmurs, his gaze shifting past me to his mother.

“Xavier is pretty infamous,” she tacks on.

A chilling realization settles over me as that name registers.

Xavier. The shadow pack’s alpha.

He’s Javi’s… father?

Javi’s gaze bounces between me and his mother with a cold, detached look in his eyes like I’ve never seen.

My lips part, but all I can manage is a single syllable. “I…”

Why can’t I form words?

My tingling lips won’t seem to move the way I want them to, my brain spinning and struggling to catch up. My knees wobble, and Javi scoops an arm around my waist to steady me, pulling me in close.

Safe.

I feel safe with him.

“Shh, it’s okay,” he leans down to whisper as my body starts to go slack, my eyes rolling back. “I’ve got you.”

“What are you doing?!” a male voice whisper-shouts from somewhere nearby as I slowly start to come to. “Alpha said nobody’s allowed to touch her!”

The dark abyss of my mind starts to give way to a tiny sliver of light, and I focus in on it like a beacon, struggling to pull myself from the hazy recesses of my consciousness.

“C’mon, just a little peek, he’ll never know,” another voice answers; one that sounds way too close for comfort.

“You really believe that?” the first guy scoffs in reply.

I feel the bed I’m resting upon dip beneath someone else’s weight, then something brushes against my arm- but suddenly it’s gone, the weight beside me leaving followed by the noise of a scuffle.

“Get off me, dude!”
