Pleasure from our pain.

She moans and I don’t care that she’s loud. I pull out and flip her, lifting her up and sinking my cock to the hilt in her soft pussy. She wraps her arms around my neck and her legs around my waist. She digs her nails into the base of my neck so hard pain sparks down my back. It sharpens my senses, giving me clarity.

“Tell me the truth,” I order. “You swore to be honest.”

Our bodies thump against the wall. I push her sweatshirt up and pull her bra down, baring her right breast. It marks pink when I tug her nipple hard enough to make her hips buck.

“If I kill the Garrisons, you can never leave me, redbird,” I say. “We’ll be tied together by that secret forever. So tell me you love me.”

CHAPTER FORTY

KEIRA

He demands my love.

So I give it to him the way I’ve given him everything else.

My mouth is so close to his I can taste him. I wish he’d offer me more than just the grim set of his square jaw and the depths of his winter-blue eyes. He blinks slowly and his lids stay heavy, dark lashes stark.

“I love you,” I whisper.

“You’re mine,” he says, his voice like gravel in his chest.

“I’m yours.”

He kisses me and catches that word on his tongue.

CHAPTER FORTY-ONE

KEIRA

Maddie and I stand in the open front door. The barn light sheds a blue glow over the driveway. The men went into the barn and I can hear them talking in low tones.

My senses are sharp, the blur of whiskey gone from my brain after Sovereign fucked me. In the gatehouse, he put a blanket around my shoulders before he kissed me, using the edges to draw me near.

I pull the blanket close.

Hoofbeats sound and Shadow breaks from the barn and pulls to a halt, gravel spraying. Gerard is a silhouette on his back, his black cowboy hat stark against the clouded sky. Westin and Jack, both astride their horses, are at his heels. They loiter, talking in low tones.

I shudder.

“I don’t like this,” I whisper. “I feel like something bad is going to happen.”

Maddie comes up behind me and pats my shoulder. It’s the first affection she’s shown me, and it feels awkward.

“It is,” she says. “But Sovereign will come back. Hopefully before noon because there’s a storm coming tomorrow.”

They’re all so confident in Gerard that it makes me want to turn my brain off and do the same. But I don’t know him the way they do. I’m a newcomer here in comparison with the years that Maddie and Westin have been by his side. They have a reason to trust him.

In the dark, he turns Shadow to look back. His eyes glint below the rim of his hat. For a second, I entertain what might happen if he doesn’t come back and the pain that rips through my chest is almost unbearable. The blanket falls from my shoulders and I close the space between us, reaching up for his hand.

He’s wearing gloves, but I feel the hard grip of his fingers around mine.

“I’ll be back,” he says hoarsely.

I can’t speak. He looks like a giant sitting astride his enormous horse, so tall I have to stand on my toes just to hold his hand.

Feeling silly, I kiss my palm and hold my hand up to him. The corners of his mouth turn up and he cradles my hand, letting my invisible kiss fall into his grip.
