“Damn, I can’t believe summer is almost over!”

I look out the window at the people passing by on the street. “Me neither.”

Time is passing by way too quickly, and I don’t want to think too much about it. Think about what it’ll mean for me.

My phone vibrates once again as we exit the car in front of our favorite Mexican restaurant.

Quinn:

So, are you coming?

Please, tell me you’re coming. I don’t think I can stand being alone with these assholes all evening.

Me:

Need I remind you they’re your friends?

Quinn:

Any idea where I can give them back?

I snort.

Me:

You don’t mean that.

“Seriously, what has you all smiling like that? It’s Quinn, isn’t it?”

I glance down at my phone as I take a seat, the corner of my mouth lifting up in a smile. “Maybe.”

“Maybe, my ass. It’s him, all right.” She wiggles her brows. “How was your birthday?”

I look away, unable to meet my friend’s inquisitive stare. “It was nice.”

Thirty years old, and I still get embarrassed as easily as I did when I was a teenager. I guess some things never change.

“Nice?” She kicks me under the table.

“Ouch, that freaking hurt.”

Of course, she ignores my protest. “What do you mean it was nice?”

“Exactly what I said. It was nice.”

Kiara huffs a breath, her lips pouting unhappily. “Well, I expected something more on the line of earth-shattering or something.”

“It was all that. And more.”

A Cheshire cat kind of smile pops on her mouth. “I knew it! Screw nice.” She bounces in her seat. “Every guy can be nice, but only the keepers are both nice and naughty.”

Just then, a waiter appears by our table. I close my eyes, taking a deep breath. I swear, one day somebody will throw us out of the restaurant because of her big mouth.

When I open my eyes, Kiara is grinning sheepishly at me.

“Where did he take you? I tried asking, but he wouldn’t say anything.”

“Antonio’s.”
