But it's the kind of trouble I'm not sure I want help out of.

Chapter 10

"Let me talk to your mom, Bri," I hear Steve and Brianna video chatting from the living room.

I roll my eyes as I grab my coffee off the counter. Ido notwant to spend the five minutes before I leave for work talking to my ex-husband.

"Mommy!" Brianna runs into the kitchen. "Daddy wants to talk to you."

She hands me the phone and then skips off toward the pantry.

"Hey," I say as I hold up the phone and fidget with one of the solitaire diamond earrings Brady gifted me yesterday through his stylist.

Steve smiles back at me. "Hey, how's it going?"

Small talk. We're doing small talk.

"Good," I answer before taking a sip of my coffee.

"How's work?"

I resist the urge to groan. Steve never asked me how I was doing when we were married. He never cared about my job when I was the one struggling to make ends meet. So, why does he suddenly care now?

"Good," I say again.

"What's the job?"

I stare at Steve's curious face on my cell phone. "Personal assistant to a CEO."

"Really?" he gasps. "Which one?"

"I don't think you've heard of him," I lie through my teeth. "Just a local guy."

"Name, Iz, I want to Google the guy. I want to know how much he's worth," Steve pushes.

I raise my free arm and glance at the nonexistent watch on my wrist. "Would you look at the time? Ireallyhave to get going."

"Wait!" Steve practically yells.

I blink slowly, wondering if I have to wait since we're not married anymore.

We still share a child.

Oh, right.

Yeah, I guess I shouldn't hang up on him. Eye roll.

"What's up?"

"I was thinking about visiting for Thanksgiving," Steve blurts out.

My mouth dries. "That's in two weeks."

"Yep," he quips. "My settlement came in. I have the funds to buy a plane ticket, and I was thinking about looking for an apartment while I'm there. There's nothing here for me. I want to be closer to you and Bri."

"Can we talk about this later?" My heart thumps, and I begin panicking.

I left Steve. I needed to get away from the life we had together—from him. I know how that sounds. It's just that I worked myself to the bone trying to make sure we had food to eat and a roof over our heads while he played video games and bitched about his missing toe. I'm not angry, but there's definitely some resentment lingering beneath the surface.
