"Izzy," Brady's voice cuts through the embarrassment.

I swivel in my chair to find him standing behind me, his face hard to read. "Where's my lunch?"

"I'm on my way to get it right now," I say as I hop up.

I don't bother looking behind me as I press the elevator button.

By the time five o'clock rolls around, I've managed to drown my embarrassment with a piece of cheesecake, wallow in self-pity, deliver Brady's lunch late, make a dinner reservation for him and Charlie at my favorite Italian restaurant, pick up Brady's suit from the dry cleaners, and borrow band-aids from Angie to keep from crying out in pain every time my new shoes rub against the blisters that have formed on the back of my heels.

I hate today.

In fact, I'd like a redo. The car accident was a premonition.Don't go to work, Iz. Things will only get worse from here.

I should have listened to it.

"You look like hell," Angie chuckles as she perches on the edge of my desk.

"I feel like hell," I lament.

"Who are these from?" Angie asks as she smells the roses.

I suck in a harsh breath. "My ex-husband."

"Ooh," she grins. "Does he still have the hots for Iz?"

"I don't know," I frown. "He didn't care about me when I was there. Why does he suddenly care now?"

"Because men are fickle creatures who don't want something until they can't have it," she winks at me.

"It was probably a mistake marrying him in the first place," I pretend-bang my head on my desk.

"Why?" Angie crosses her arms over her chest.

"I wasn't over my first love when I married him," I raise my head. "I thought marriage would be a good distraction. I thought it would help me get over the heartache of losing him. It didn't. My marriage wasn't all bad, though. We had Brianna and I wouldn't trade her for the world."

"What happened with the first love?" Angie's eyes widen.

"What always happens," I hitch a shoulder. "Men are fickle creatures who don't want something until they can't have it."

Angie smirks. "You got that right."

"Am I right for this job?"

"Why are you asking me that question?" She furrows her brow.

"Because I know you'll tell me the truth."

"And Brady won't?"

I glance over my shoulder at his closed office door. "I don't know."

"I think you have a lot to learn," she replies. "But I've never seen anyone work with Brady as well as you do. He's easy-going, but he doesn't like incompetence. You're the only assistant he hasn't complained about."

I swallow harshly. "I like this job. I don't want to lose it."

"Then, just keep doing what you're doing," she winks at me. "By the way, those earrings are gorgeous. You should wear them every day."
