“Aura, I don’t think...”

“Krampus, just let me...” I shifted on top of him, and when I sat back down, my pussy came in contact with his shaft. If I wanted to position him at my entrance, I would have to lift my hips higher than this. For now, it felt good to just rub myself on him. “This feels amazing. Why are you fighting it?”

“You don’t understand...”

He was panting, and I wanted to see his face. I was done with his silly rules and traditions. I was done with the leather mask. Before I could change my mind, and before he caught on to what I wanted to do, I yanked the mask off.

It took a second for my eyes to adjust. It was dark outside, and the only light came from the fireplace. Krampus had his eyes closed and his lips parted, and he didn’t notice that I’d taken off my mask. He was so big that even sitting on his lap, I had to look up at his face. And sure enough, it was covered in fur. He was, as I’d guessed, furry from head to toe. The horns on his head were huge, his nose was long and crooked, his cheekbones were high, and his ears stuck upright on the sides of his head, big and pointy.

This was my husband. This was Krampus.

Noticing that I hadn’t moved in a while, he slowly opened his eyes. They were as dark as the night.

We stared at each other for a minute, neither of us making a single gesture. His expression didn’t change, except for his eyes widening in shock.

And then he did the last thing I’d imagined he’d do.

He pushed me off him.

Chapter Fifteen

Krampus

Horror. When she looked at me, I could tell she couldn’t stand the sight of me.

For a moment in time, we were both frozen. She in terror, I in wonder. Her eyes were golden. I’d seen nothing like it in humans. There were species on Alia Terra with golden eyes, so I wondered if Aura might’ve had an ancestor who was not entirely human. After all, since the Temples had been created, monsters took human brides all the time, and Alia Terra was filled with hybrids of all kinds.

As much as I wanted to lose myself in her eyes forever, I felt like I needed to run. And hide. I pushed her off me, and before she understood what was happening and regained her balance, I buttoned up my pants and ran to the door. Frost jumped to his feet, alerted by the commotion, and when I opened the door, he slipped through, and we both found ourselves outside.

I stood in the harsh wind for a second. I’d put on my boots but hadn’t laced them up. It wasn’t snowing yet, but it felt like it would soon. It felt like a snowstorm was brewing, which was so fitting, because what I felt inside was like a storm.

I looked around me, unsure of what to do next. The only good option seemed to be the barn. I knew I couldn’t run from my bride forever, but I needed a few minutes to myself. To think. I headed in that direction, and Frost followed me. Inside, it was warm, and Snowdrop turned his head to greet us.

I closed the door, walked over to Snowdrop to pat him on the back, then sat on the floor, feeling like my legs couldn’t carry me anymore. Frost lay his head on my lap, where Aura had been just a few minutes ago.

How perfectly we fit together! Despite the considerable size difference, when she touched me, it felt right. She hadn’t seemed terrified. On the contrary, she’d been so eager and confident. But then she’d had to do the one thing I’d asked not to. She’d taken off her mask and looked at my face.

“It’s over,” I said to Snowdrop, who was eating his hay lazily and looking at me. “She’ll want to leave now. She didn’t say it, but I could see it in her eyes. She thinks I’m hideous. I don’t blame her. I think I’m hideous.”

Snowdrop sighed heavily. If he could talk, what would he say? Would he comfort me?

I looked down at Frost, and he looked up at me with his huge eyes. When he looked at me like that, I saw a puppy, not a massive beast who could scare the people in town with one bark.

“No woman would ever want to be with me. Not even her, who was chosen for me by the Temple. She couldn’t even speak when she saw me. She’s always so chatty, but when she took off the mask, she was speechless. I waited for her to say something, and when she didn’t, I couldn’t be there anymore, in the same room, with her so close to me. Now that she knows who I am, what I look like... she’ll never touch me again. I’ll be lucky if she still wants to speak to me.”

Neither Snowdrop nor Frost said anything. They only communicated with their eyes, and I could tell they felt sorry for me. It had only been two days. Two days of pure bliss, and starting tomorrow, I was going to be alone again. Eternally alone, because I wasn’t going to try taking a bride a second time.

“I should go back and talk to her,” I said. “She probably wants to go back home today. It’s dark outside, but I’m sure you can navigate these roads with your eyes closed,” I said to Snowdrop. He nodded. Or I chose to think he did. I scratched Frost behind the ears. “Do you want to come with us? I know you like her. She likes you too. I think she’ll miss you. She won’t miss me, but she’ll miss you, for sure.”

I was just about to get off the floor and face reality when there was a knock on the barn door. Great. Reality had come to face me.

“Krampus? Are you in there?”

I flopped back down, my legs once again refusing to do what they were supposed to do.

“Stupid question,” she continued. “I know you’re in there because I followed your footprints.” Another beat. “I’m coming in.”

“No!”
