“I can manage. Thanks.”

“Okay.”

He walked out of the room and locked the door. Just in case Lockwood came to see how things were going in his absence. This was the first time he wasn’t bringing me food himself.

I washed myself the best I could, changed into the fresh clothes that were a size too big, then knocked on the door when I was done. Mason came in and disposed of the bucket that was now filled with dirty water. I felt like a new person, and even though I was terribly embarrassed that he had to see me like this and take care of me like I was a child, I reminded myself that it wasn’t my fault.

Unless Lockwood wasn’t lying, and it was...

No, he was surely lying. I didn’t feel like I was a bad person. Amnesia or no amnesia, that was something I simply knew.

“Would you like to have dinner together?” Mason asked.

“That would be nice.”

He brought his own food, and we sat down on the floor to eat. It was awkward at first. We stole glances at each other, almost furtively, smiling when our eyes met.

“Has more of your memory come back?” he asked.

“Yes. I know where I live. I remember my home address. That’s great, right?”

He nodded.

“I remember my parents. They live in a different state. I moved here for college and stayed. I see them once a year, but we call each other all the time. They must be worried sick. They’ve probably already called the police. I’m not sure how long I’ve been here. Three days? Four? Less than a week.”

“Do you have any siblings?”

I shook my head. “No. Do you?”

“I have a brother.”

“What’s his name? Tell me about him.” This was a good opportunity to get to know Mason better.

“Goliath. He is married to Kara, a human. They have two children, Xavier and Nira.”

My eyes widened. “A golem and a human woman? How does that work?” Not that it interested me personally. No... not at all!

He chuckled. “When it’s true love, you make it work. They would do anything for each other and for their children. And I would do anything for them.”

“No, but I mean... physically. How does it work?”

His eyes widened slightly when he understood what I was talking about.

I blushed. “I’m sorry. I don’t mean to pry. It’s rude of me to ask such things. I’m just curious. You don’t have to tell me.”

“No, not at all. I was curious too when my brother brought Kara home and announced she was the one. I had the same question, and he had to explain it to me.”

He averted his gaze, and I waited. He seemed to be embarrassed too, which only fueled my curiosity.

“Golems are made of stone,” he started. “I mean, our skin is. Not the same stone we find in nature, but very similar. There are a few molecular differences. On the inside, though, we’re very much alive. Our organs are similar to yours, we bleed if something pierces our skin and reaches underneath, though that rarely happens. Compared to humans, there’s something extra that we have. Fire.”

“Fire?”

“Yes. This fire can start in three different places in our bodies.” He touched his heart first. “Here.” Then his stomach. “Here.” Below his stomach, near his pelvis. “And here.”

“Incredible. I had no idea!”

“It’s something that’s specific to my species. Well, the fire that burns in... this area,” he motioned at his pelvis again, “Produces a liquid that pours out and into... I mean during... You know.”He took a breath and chuckled awkwardly. “I’m sorry. My brother explained it better, but I can’t seem to find the words.”
