“Well, I’m sure your brother could take the liberty of calling things by their name.” I laughed.

He laughed with me. “Yes. Anyway, you get it.”

“Sort of. Isn’t it... hot?”

“A little. Not uncomfortably hot, according to Goliath. And his wife hasn’t melted yet, so...”

We laughed harder. The tension dissipated, and I was glad I’d asked him this uncomfortable question. It had brought us closer.

“Right, so,” he continued, “We thought this liquid is for lubrication purposes only, but it appears that if a golem does, well... you know what with a human female, the liquid helps... mmm... stretch things? So she can... um... you know, accommodate him?” He rubbed the back of his head. “I’m sorry. I’m sure I could’ve explained this better.”

“No, no! You explained it beautifully!” I couldn’t stop laughing and blushing like I had the fire he was talking about inside me, too. “I get it. Trust me. I can almost picture it. The whole process.”

He fixed me with his gaze. “You can?”

I bit the inside of my lip. Okay, maybe I shouldn’t have said that. Could he tell I was imagining him on top of me, the liquid he’d described dripping from his...

Oh, wow! I needed to get a hold of myself, because I was starting to feel a similar kind of liquid drenching my panties.

He didn’t look away from my face, and I wondered... Was he imagining me under him?

“Maybe we should change the subject,” I said.

“You’re right.” He chuckled and looked away. “Yes, let’s change the subject.”

“So, what’s your job, exactly? Are you independent, or...”

“I work for Monster Security Agency. It’s private, the agents are all monsters. I guess that’s obvious. My brother worked for them too, but then he had an accident and had to retire.”

“That’s how you ended up guarding me,” I said.

“Vincent Lockwood hired me, yes. I didn’t know what the job was. I signed a standard contract that only had a few extra clauses. I will confess that it sounded fishy, but I didn’t know quite how fishy it could be. He told me I had to stand guard outside the door and not ask questions. Had I behaved, this would’ve been long term. We both know I’m not behaving, and this ends tonight.”

I took a deep breath. “What’s the plan? You’ll go snooping around?”

“Yes. I’ll find whatever I can, then I’m burning this place to the ground, with Lockwood in it. You can’t change my mind, Maya.”

I smiled. “I don’t want to. I just want to know why he did this to me, if what he says about his mother is true... I want to know, that’s all. If I am to have a normal life after this, I need closure.”

“I understand. I will do everything I can to give you that closure.”

I reached out and gently touched his arm. “I know you regret taking this job, but you shouldn’t. You’re a good guy, Mason.”

He shook his head. “I should’ve done something sooner. The moment I realized he had a person in here. I let him get into my head.”

“Don’t think like that. I know I don’t.”

I stretched and yawned, feeling exhausted after the eventful day.

“You should rest,” he said, standing up.

He offered me his hand, and I took it. But my legs had fallen asleep, and as soon as I got up, I collapsed. He caught me in his arms and held me against him for a moment. I could feel his stone-like skin radiate heat, and I pressed myself closer to him, trying to feel more of it. It was a strange sensation. As the heat seeped into my body, it soothed all the aches in my muscles.

“Maya,” he whispered.

I felt his hot breath on top of my head. He was so tall that I was basically hugging his lower abs.

“Sorry, I’m fine,” I said, pulling away.
