He let me, and I was a little disappointed. At the same time, he was being careful, respectful of my personal space. That was a good sign that I couldn’t ignore.

“I’ll help you to the bed.”

I laughed. “Bed...”

“Mattress...”

“Thank you, Mason.”

“Anything for you, Maya.”

Chapter Eleven

Mason

The moment she was in my arms, I knew. She was my mate. The fire in my heart burst with such force that I thought it would become visible through the cracks in my skin. I tried to tame it, push it down, so Maya wouldn’t freak out at the sight of it. Fortunately, I was successful. The flame throbbed in my chest, eager to spill out, but I kept it under control.

And then a second fire started in my lower region. In simpler words, in my cock. I became so hard that when Maya pulled away, I let out a little breath of relief. I wanted her in my arms, but not at the cost of scaring her if she felt my erection poke at her ribs.

This was the Mating Fire, and it was even rarer than the fire of the heart. And it wasn’t just a little heat in my chest and down there. It was a boiling volcano.

Now I felt even sadder for my brother that he’d never boiled like this for Kara. The fire of the heart could ignite on its own for loved ones, like family and close friends. And the fire of the... um... well, loins?... could be ignited by an intimate partner. But both? At the same time? Only a true mate could do that.

I helped her lie down on the mattress. She let out a groan as her joins popped. My incandescent heart ached for her. She was so thin, even if Lockwood had fed her decently these past few days. The stress was too much for her. I wanted to scoop her into my arms and run away with her. Where would I take her, though? To her house? I didn’t trust that she was safe there. To my apartment? Right. I didn’t have one anymore. I’d given it up knowing that I would be working for Lockwood long term and living here, in his basement.

Okay, this was something I needed to figure out before I burned down the house with Lockwood in it. The only place Icould think of was my brother’s house. She would be safe there, with me and my family.

“You’re in pain,” I said.

“A little.”

“What hurts?”

She laughed bitterly. “Everything? My left side is the worst. I think a concussion wasn’t the only thing I got when I tried to fight him off.”

She lifted her shirt gingerly, and I saw the bruise on her delicate ribs. She probed it with her fingers, wincing.

“You don’t think I have a broken rib, do you?”

I pressed my hand to the bruise. My hand was so big that it covered three quarters of the space between her armpit and hip bone. I let my heat seep through, hoping it would soothe her.

“That feels better,” she said.

“I don’t think anything’s broken,” I said. “You’d be in much more pain, probably unable to sit or stand.”

She smiled. “That’s good news.”

She closed her eyes, and we stayed like that for a while. My hand on her soft skin felt divine. The heat of her body mingled with mine, and it only intensified the Mating Fire that burned inside me.

When I thought she’d fallen asleep, I removed my hand and stood up.

“Mason?”

“Yes?” Apparently, she was still awake.

“I know you have to execute the plan, but could you stay a while longer? Ten minutes. Please?”

Never in my life was I going to say no to her.
