How had Kyle known what Elijah was doing? “Oh my god. Are you following me around?”

“Just answer my question,” Kyle snapped as a few strands of his hair slipped from its perfect style. It was windy, which made it colder outside, but Elijah wouldn’t care if it was freezing out. He’d rather get frostbite than ask Kyle for a ride.

“What I do is none of your damn business,” Elijah said heatedly. “We’re not in a relationship. I don’t owe you anything.”

“You’re right.” Kyle held up his hands. “I’ve been an idiot, Elijah. I see that now. I’ve seen it since I was last at your house and had a lot of time to think things over.” He sighed. “At least let me give you a ride home. As a friend.”

Elijah was wavering on his resolution to walk when a strong gust of wind whipped past him. It was late evening, and he’d already walked to the hospital from work. He was exhausted, cold, and wished Kyle would leave him the hell alone so he didn’t have to stand out there.

“Come on.” Kyle smiled. “You look like your freezing, and it’s getting colder outside.”

Against his better judgment, Elijah agreed. “Straight to my house and no bullshit about my grandparents.”

Midnight Falls was a small town, and there was no doubt in Elijah’s mind that Kyle had already heard that Claire was in the hospital, especially since Elijah’s neighbors kept bringing over food like Elijah would starve to death without their casseroles.

They’d probably let themselves in and put them in the kitchen while Elijah was visiting his grandma this evening. His grandparents’ neighbors were mostly elderly and had no qualms about letting themselves in.

Last night, after Mason had driven him home, Elijah had gone inside his house to find someone had done the dishes from earlier and cleaned up the rest of the house. Honestly, he’d appreciated it, because he’d been able to go to sleep on clean sheets.

They’d more than likely also told everyone in town of Claire’s situation. Hopefully that made Kyle nicer, but Elijah really doubted the guy was giving him a ride home out of the goodness of his heart.

Another gust whipped past, and now Elijah’s teeth were chattering.

Kyle opened the passenger door, and Elijah slipped inside the warm and toasty car. He stuck his hands by the vents as Kyle got in and drove onto the main road. When Kyle turned toward Dale Drive, which lead to the back roads of Midnight Falls, Elijah turned and looked at him.

“This isn’t the way to my house.”

Kyle picked up speed, smiling at Elijah. “I thought we would talk.”

“I knew not to trust you!” Elijah slapped his hand on the dash. “Take me home, Kyle.”

“You can trust me,” Kyle argued as the car went faster. “We’ve been dating for a while, Elijah. I know you better than the owner of Wild Tiger. I’m the one you should have come to when your grandma had her accident, not him.”

Just how long had Kyle been spying on him? Elijah glanced at the speedometer and saw they were going over eighty miles an hour, and the backroad speed limit was only fifty. “Stop the fucking car!”

The needle headed toward ninety, with Kyle blowing past stop signs. “Are you going to agree to drop that asshole?” Kyle asked. “Are you going to agree to give me another chance?”

Elijah’s heart was in his throat. It was beating so damn fast that he was going to have a heart attack. Especially when the needle went past ninety and was almost at one hundred.

“Yes!” Elijah would agree to anything to get Kyle to stop the car. One wrong move and they would both be dead. Why hadn’t he seen just how unhinged Kyle was? Sure, he’d been a jerk when it came to Elijah’s grandparents, had only thought of himself, but he’d never been this reckless before.

He literally held Elijah’s life in his hands.

The needle started to descend. Now they were at fifty. Elijah was sweating, his pulse racing, and now he had a migraine. He didn’t dare scream at Kyle for being so irresponsible, because Kyle just might drive faster again.

“What do you see in Mason?” Kyle asked as he headed toward Elijah’s house.

All Elijah had to do was placate him until he could get out of the car.

“There’s nothing between us,” Elijah argued. “It’s where Gage works.”

“But he picked you up the night your grandma had her accident.” Kyle’s eyes narrowed. “Why did you call him and not me?”

“Your house is too far,” Elijah said. “Mason was closer.”

He hadn’t even thought of calling Kyle. In fact, since Kyle had come to his house and talked about putting Elijah’s grandparents in a nursing home, Elijah hadn’t thought of him since. The only person—besides his grandparents—that was on Elijah’s mind was Mason.

Elijah hadn’t wanted to become a groupie, but he was wildly attracted to the guy. Mason was on Elijah’s mind at work and at home. He felt a connection to Mason, whereas he’d never felt one with Kyle.
