Not in all the time they’d been dealing with each other. That was why Elijah had never committed to Kyle. At first, it had felt nice for someone to pay him attention. But over time, Elijah had seen the real Kyle Durman.

Selfish, petty, and a straight-up asshole.

“Okay, I’ll accept the fact that I live farther away from town than Wild Tiger.” Kyle nodded. “But he picked you up and took you to see your grandma, Elijah. You should have called me if you wanted to visit her.”

So many things were on the tip of Elijah’s tongue, but he bit back the words since he wasn’t out of Kyle’s car yet. He should have just frozen to death instead of getting into the damn car. That was what he got for not listening to his gut instinct.

“He didn’t pick me up,” Elijah argued. “I walked to the hospital after work, and I was about to walk home when you showed up.”

“What about last night?” Kyle turned onto Elijah’s street. “You were hanging out there. I saw you get out of Mason’s truck.”

“He drove me from the hospital after I’d been there for hours,” Elijah argued. “I was at Wild Tiger to see my friends. Mason gave me a ride home, and I haven’t spoken to him since.”

“Drake could have driven you home last night.”

When they pulled into the driveway, Elijah got out, holding the passenger door open. “What I fucking do is none of your business. No, I’m not giving you another chance, because you’re an immature douchebag. Stop stalking me, stop approaching me, stop being anywhere near me, you reckless piece of shit.”

Elijah slammed the door closed and walked inside. Normally he didn’t lock the door—neither did his grandparents—but he locked it as soon as he was in the house. Then he heard Kyle rev his motor before he took off, his tires squealing.

Elijah rested his back against the door, thankful he’d survived Kyle’s driving. He would dismiss the jerk, but if Kyle was stalking him, things were more serious than Elijah had thought. Over the past two years, when they weren’t dating, it was as if Kyle had forgotten Elijah existed.

There was never any real passion between them. It was more like they were both lonely and hooked up. Had Elijah misread something? He’d never thought Kyle had feelings for him.

Kyle only had feelings for himself.

But maybe Elijah had been wrong.

He nearly jumped out of his skin when his phone rang. Elijah pulled it from his back pocket, relieved it wasn’t Kyle calling him.

It was Mason.

With a shaky hand, Elijah answered the call. “Hello?”

“Hey,” Mason said, his voice smooth and inviting. “Was wondering if you wanted to go for a drive.”

All Elijah could see was that needle pushing toward a hundred miles an hour. His stomach soured as bile worked its way up his throat. “No thanks.”

“Oh, okay,” Mason said. “Is everything okay?”

Just hearing Mason’s voice helped to calm Elijah down. Fuck Kyle if he thought Elijah was going to kick Mason to the curb. The guy was stalking him, but Elijah wasn’t going to let the guy ruin his friendship with Mason.

“Can you come over?” Elijah asked, really needing Mason right now.

“I’m on my way.”

* * * *

When Mason stepped inside Elijah’s home after his mate had unlocked the door, he knew something was wrong. His mate had sat down on the couch, picked up the mug from the coffee table, but worse, he appeared pale. Elijah looked up, and Mason saw terror in his mate’s eyes.

“What’s going on?” Mason closed the door behind him and took a seat next to Elijah.

With a sigh, Elijah told him what happened when he left the hospital. The more his mate talked, the angrier Mason became.

“He’s been stalking you?”

Elijah nodded then took a sip of his tea. “We’ve been dating for two years but not continuously. We’ve been on-again, off-again, though we’ve been off for some time now.” He explained how Kyle had no regard for his grandparents, how he was jealous of Mason, and Mason’s heart wanted to give out at how reckless Kyle had been going so fast with Elijah in the car.

He was going to kill the son of a bitch.
