“What happened?” he asked, voice tight.

“Kyle,” Elijah said simply, explaining no further.

Mason’s eyes darkened as he looked away. His hands unclenched, and he stepped closer, reaching for Elijah gently.

“Are you okay?” he asked, whispering the words.

Elijah nodded, accepting Mason’s touch. He wasn’t sure of his mate’s stance on showing public affection, but Mason showed him how he felt when he pulled Elijah into his arms. Elijah had never felt safer than having his mate’s arms around him, holding him close.

“I’m going to kill the son of a bitch,” Mason whispered.

“Why are you here?” Elijah asked.

“Had to run an errand, and when I saw that Drake’s car was blocking traffic…” He touched Elijah’s face, as if afraid he’d cause more damage. “Are you sure you’re okay?”

“Bruised ego, busted lip, aching face, but I’ll be okay.”

Sheriff Harper cleared his throat, bringing Elijah’s attention back to him. “Who was the instigator?”

“Kyle,” Mason said. “He did it because of me.”

Sheriff Harper sighed. “He came into the station yesterday to lodge a complaint against you, Mason. I saw your handiwork.” The sheriff turned to Drake. “Get your car out of traffic.”

Drake and Tido walked into the street, but Gage stood there, like he didn’t want to leave Elijah’s side.

“I’ll have my men track Kyle down,” the sheriff said. “He’ll be arrested for assault since so many people witnessed what he did. I’ll also need statements from you four.”

“Kyle ripped Elijah from out of the car,” Gage said indignantly. “We were waiting at the light, and he just yanked the door open and dragged Elijah out. Then he pulled him to the sidewalk and started wailing on him.”

Elijah heard Mason growl.

Sheriff Harper waved a hand at Elijah. “Go get some ice on that. When you’re ready, come to the station to give me your report.”

Roman was going to kill him. He’d been on his way to work when Kyle had decided to lose his ever-loving mind. Elijah had never thought of Kyle as unhinged, not in a violent way, but Kyle had proved him wrong.

Mason was barely containing his rage. The punk-ass human had touched his mate, and now Mason was out for blood. Kyle could try to hide all he wanted, but Mason would find him, and then he was going to gut the prick.

“I don’t want to go home,” Elijah said to him. “I don’t want my parents seeing my face.”

With a nod, Mason directed Elijah to his truck, which was parked at the curb. He helped Elijah in then took off, heading toward his house.

“I can’t believe he did that,” Mason said, curling his fingers around the steering wheel, imagining the steering wheel was Kyle’s throat. Mason also didn’t like the fear in Elijah’s eyes when he’d approached him. He never wanted to see that look on Elijah again.

As they pulled in front of Mason’s house, Elijah’s gaze drifted toward the woods.

“You have a very nice home,” Elijah said.

“Thanks.” It was a two-story tan house with black shutters. Mason had bought it when he first arrived in Midnight Falls. It had been a fixer-upper, but that meant he’d gotten it cheaper and he could do the repairs himself, which meant he could remodel it however he wanted to.

What he really loved was how it butted up against the forest.

“Do you run in the woods?” Elijah asked.

“Sometimes,” Mason said. “When I need to. To blow off steam or release pent-up energy.”

Mason showed him to the guest bathroom and handed him a bag of ice.
