“But they’re not.” I put my fingers under her chin, encouraging her to look at me. “And capturing a human won’t be as impressive as if I was in my natural form.”

“Both of you are right. Lars deserves the chance to go home. But the security team is keeping a close watch on the situation,” Bibi declared.

“Uh, Bibi?” Hugo tapped on his tablet screen. “Looks like some of our cameras have been destroyed. Ones that are close to Lars’s mountain.”

Shit.

“Any damage to my house?” I asked.

Hugo shook his head. “None of them can get up there.”

“How are we getting up there?” Hannah asked. “Rock climbing isn’t my forte.”

“There’s a hidden entrance you should all be able to access easily.”

“Are there cameras at this hidden entrance?” Bibi asked.

“There are.” Hugo tapped on the screen. “All in working order.”

Bjorn pulled the van as deep into the mountain range as he was able. There were no pickup trucks at that pull off, which was a good sign. Not that a few humans would’ve stopped me from going home when it was so close, but I was relieved to not have to deal with them.

“It’s so beautiful here,” Hannah exclaimed as we walked. “So different than Sunset Springs. I feel like we’ve slipped into a secret part of the world.”

This time of year, the forest smelled divine, with sun-warmed pine trees and wildflowers. We were far enough up that the temperatures still got cool and damp at night, and the petals didn’t get scorched. Only the highest mountains were still capped with snow, and the water that ran from them provided a soundtrack for us as we traveled.

“I’ve done my best to preserve it the way it was when our village thrived. It wasn’t all sand and rock back then. There was water and grass and so many flowers. I wish you could’ve seen it.”

“I can’t wait to hear all about it.”

The rock in the mountain jutted out slightly. Otherwise, there was no sign of the entrance. By design, the door wasn’t easy for a human to move. Even for me. I rarely used this door; I’d only put it in as a safety measure, in case I was unable to access the mountaintop. I’d never anticipated welcoming humans into my home.

Was I concerned that some of the cameras had been destroyed? Absolutely. But as long as this door had remained undisturbed, I was fairly confident whoever had vandalized the equipment hadn’t been able to get inside.

Hannah sighed. “You don’t know how much I’ve dreamed about this place since I was here last.”

I took a step forward, backing her against the craggy wall. “Tell me about those dreams.”

Her blue eyes shined bright, even in the low light. “They’re not safe for the cameras, but after this, I’ll definitely add you having me against the wall to them.”

“Good to know.” Her suggestion made my cock twitch. The sensation was startling, all consuming. If my little human kept teasing me like this, I’d be blind with need for her before we were able to be alone together. “I didn’t get a chance to show you everything last time you were here.”

“I can’t wait to see it.”

I led her down the darkened hallway, relishing the cool air and the way the earth crunched under my boots. But I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off.

Maybe it was the clothes, the camera crew, the beautiful woman who kept daring me to ravage her. Or maybe I’d just been away, trapped in an artificial environment for so damn long I forgot what it felt like to be me.

I sensed something. A familiar sensation that refused to be forgotten.

You’re letting her get too close. My brother’s voice whispered in my ear. There will be hell to pay.

Not now…

“This is the inner living quarters. I spend a lot of time here when it’s warmer, because it stays cool. Usually there’s a torch here, but it must’ve gone out.”

I reached for the spot where the torch should’ve been and found nothing. A rumble shook the mountain. I grasped Hannah, letting a similar noise emit from my body.

Not fucking now.
