“But that’s not it!” a female voice comes over the loudspeaker in the room. “And now, for the guy who will be representing the freshman class … Aaron Thompson!”

Some guys hoot and holler around us, and I have to laugh at the fact that he won too. I honestly thought Beau would be the top runner just because he’s new around here, but of course, Aaron is claiming the top-dog spot. He’s making quite the name for himself, being the starting quarterback on the JV team as a freshman.

I glance over at Beau, and he seems to not have a care in the world for who’s being announced as the male freshman winner anyway.

As they announce the rest of the guys for each class and the nominees for king, Beau slides over to me and whispers in my ear, “I’d love to escort you that night.”

A smile so big that I can’t contain it crosses my face, and when he chuckles lightly, I have to force myself to not roll my eyes at how ridiculous I must look right now.

After trying to compose myself, I nod. “I’d love if you would escort me.”

He winks and my chest goes tight. “I’d be honored. You let me know what I have to wear, and I’ll be there.”

The little girl inside me is trying so hard not to scream and jump up and down right now. Thankfully, our teacher claps her hands together to get the class’s attention and get us back on track for the morning.

Once the bell rings, Beau and I walk out side by side, only to be bombarded by Megan and Heather, who come racing toward me with their arms open wide and screaming at the top of their lungs.

“You won!” Heather squeals as she wraps her arms around me, jumping around.

After a few seconds, I pull away from Heather, only to be jumped on by Megan, who yells in my ear, “Congratulations!”

“Thanks, you guys, but let me breathe,” I taunt.

“I’ll call you later so we can plan,” Beau says as he walks away toward a group of football players.

“Yeah, sounds good,” I respond, then look back to the girls, who have their eyes wide open at me, waiting for me to fill them in on what we have to plan.

“Spill it, girl. What was he talking about?” Heather asks.

I rub my lips together and raise my eyebrows as I nonchalantly say, “Being my escort for homecoming.”

They both scream again, making me laugh.

“You finally got up the nerve to ask him out?” Heather questions.

I shake my head. “Nope. He asked if he could escort me!”

“Shut. Up. That’s so freaking cool. I’m so excited for you,” Heather says, running her arm through mine and leading us to our lockers. “You’d better look damn fine that night so that boy will finally make a move on you.”

The thought makes my blood hot and rush through my entire body as my heart pounds a little faster.

“Let’s hope so!” I respond, making Heather and Megan high-five each other as we walk down the hallway.

Later that night, I’m sitting on my bed, doing homework, when there’s a knock at my window. Knowing it’s Aaron, I hop out of bed and slide it up without even checking to see who it is first.

He’s been coming over like this ever since my mom died. It was summertime, and the fireflies were out of control that night. He snuck out of his house and knocked on my window to make sure I saw them, hoping it would cheer me up somehow.

Surprisingly, it did.

I swore up and down they were my mom, telling me that she was still here.

I’ve never looked at a firefly the same ever since.

I think that was the first night I knew he was more than just the boy next door. I knew he’d be my best friend for life.

“Hey. How was practice?” I ask as I sit at the desk next to the window.
