He shrugs. “I’m finally getting used to the ass-kicking your dad gives us nightly, so not that bad. I didn’t get to say congratulations at school today.”

I tilt my head, giving him a cheesy grin. “Thank you. Congrats to you too. Pretty cool we both won.”

He runs his hand through his wet hair, and I look at the clock. My dad isn’t even home from practice, so Aaron must have showered and come right over here.

“So, I was thinking …” He pauses, and I look back to him.

“Yeah?”

“Since we both have to have an escort to this event …” He pauses again. “I was thinking maybe we can go together. Thought it might be cool to have the winners up there together.”

I drop my shoulders forward and pout my lip, feeling bad for having to turn him down. “I’m so sorry, but when I won, Beau was sitting next to me. He asked if he could be my escort, and I said yes.”

“Oh, okay.”

He tries to hide his expression, but I can tell he’s a little embarrassed. I feel so bad that I already said yes to Beau.

He shrugs and shakes his head. “I just figured everyone else would be too afraid to ask you—you know, because of your dad and all. I just wanted to make sure you had a date.”

I narrow my eyes at him slightly but then blow it off. He’s probably right anyway. I’m just glad I didn’t have to ask anyone because I know I wouldn’t have had the nerve to ask anyone myself, especially someone like Beau.

“Yeah, I was pretty surprised when he offered, but I thought it was really sweet of him.”

He nods. “Yep, sure was. Well, okay … I guess I have to go figure out who I really want to ask.”

Really want to ask?

I shake off his words for the second time tonight.

“I’m sure Joy would go with you. Rumor is, she’s been checking you out,” I tease.

He shrugs. “Yeah, maybe I’ll ask her.” He looks around my room, then slaps his hand on the windowsill. “Well, okay, have a good night. See you tomorrow.”

“Bye.” I wave as I shut my window again just in time to hear my dad pulling into the garage, so I leave my room to greet him.

“Hey, Daddy. How was practice?” I ask when I get to the kitchen, where he’s standing.

He places his hand on the counter. “Now, what is this I hear about you winning homecoming princess and Beau escorting you?”

My face instantly flushes as a rush of excitement races through me at the mention of his name. “How do you know that?”

He grabs me and brings me in for a hug as he kisses the top of my head. “My baby girl. I’m so proud of you.” He hugs me tighter. “That is really cool that you won. I’m very happy for you.”

I hug him back. “Thanks, Daddy.”

When he steps back, he lowers his eyes at me. “Now, about Beau …”

“Yeah, how did you know he offered to escort me?”

“Because like the well-mannered boy he is, he came up to me after practice and asked if I would be okay with it.”

My eyes open wide. “He did?”

He nods with a tilt to his lips. “That he did.” He holds up his finger to point at me. “Now, I told him I’m not okay with you dating anyone, but I know you need an escort to this thing, and since he came to ask me, I gave him my blessing.”

I can’t help myself when I jump on the big man and give him a hug. “Oh, Daddy. Thank you!”

He laughs. “I’ll have strict rules on this dress you’re going to wear. Nothing too grown-up-looking.”
