I smile big. “I know. I’ll find something conservative, I promise.”

“I know you will. I’m so proud of you.”

“You. Look. Amazing.” Heather stands back and admires her work. She wants to do hair when she’s older, and she really should because she obviously has a natural talent.

When I look at myself and see the updo she’s created with little tendrils of curls hanging around my face, I cover my mouth in shock. “Heather! It’s gorgeous!”

I turn to get a better view in the mirror.

She steps back and nods. “Yep, I think it’s my best work yet.”

I give her a hug. “It’s amazing. Thank you!”

Megan walks in from getting the eye shadow I want to wear from her bag and stops short. “Wow!” is all she says, and I feel my heart leap for joy. “Beau is going to be begging you for some tonight.”

I slap her arm, and she laughs.

“What? Just stating a fact. If I were a guy, I’d be begging you to give me some.”

We all laugh as she puts the finishing touches on my makeup. “And … done.” She turns to Heather. “Look at our girl, all grown up.”

“Oh, stop.”

Heather’s mom comes around the corner and stops when she sees me all done up. “Look at you,” she says in disbelief. “Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful.”

“Thank you, Mrs. Donaldson,” I respond.

Since my dad has to be at the game early, she offered to let me get ready here and bring us to the school. Heather and Megan are performing tonight, so they’re in the uniform while I’m wearing a beautiful dark blue gown that’s covered in a sequined design.

Debbie, Aaron’s mom, was sweet enough to take me shopping to pick it out. Since she only has a son, I think she enjoyed it just as much as I did, probably thinking she’d never get to do something like that.

The dress hugs my body in all the right places and has a high neck, so my dad approved—thank God because when I found this dress, I knew it was the one.

I can’t wait to see Beau in the tux he rented with the same color blue bow tie.

Since he’s playing on the JV team, he’s going to shower and get ready at the school gym so he can meet me in time.

As we arrive at the school, I get so many compliments from classmates on how pretty I look as we head to the gymnasium. Thankfully, they are having a small get-together for the royal party, so we don’t have to sit in the stands, all dressed up.

Even though Heather and Megan walked with me up to the school, they said good-bye at the door and went to where the drill team hangs out during the game as I entered the gymnasium by myself.

Instantly, I see Debbie standing there, waiting for Aaron to get cleaned up, so I walk over to her.

“Hello, Debbie,” I say as I reach out to give her a hug.

“Oh, sweetie, don’t you look gorgeous.”

“Thank you.” I grin as I take a deep breath in, all of a sudden nervous at the thought of Beau seeing me all dolled up like this.

Joy walks through the door just then with her parents.

“Oh, there’s his date,” Debbie says as she excuses herself and heads her way.

I watch as she walks toward her, and I stand by myself. When I feel a light tap on my arm, I turn to see a woman standing there.

“You must be Sadie,” she says. “I’m Maya, Beau’s mom.”
