“Love you, sweetie.”

“Love you too.”

I exit the house and shut the door behind me, trying my absolute hardest not to look toward Aaron’s place as I walk down the sidewalk to the big truck parked at the curb. Heather opens the door and hops out, so I can climb in behind her in the backseat.

“Hey, Justin. Thanks for coming to get me,” I say as I get situated.

“No problem. What shall we do tonight, ladies?” he asks.

Heather slides up next to him. “What do you have in mind?”

“Plenty with you; don’t you worry.” He gives her a quick kiss. “But that’s later. First, we need to get some drinks. Let’s see what Jimmy’s up to.” He puts the truck in gear and drives away with the sound of the engine reverberating around us.

Curiosity gets the best of me as we pull away, and I turn to look at Aaron’s house, only to see his light off but his window is obviously open by the way the curtain blows in the wind.

We drive toward a country road, and when Heather turns and gives me a cheesy grin, I know we’re in for a good night.

Being freshmen last year, none of us could drive, but we always heard about the parties that happened in the country, never able to actually go though. I guess, tonight, our luck has changed.

Justin pulls off onto a dirt road, and when we see other trucks parked, excitement rushes through me.

This is exactly what I need tonight.

We walk up to a group hanging out with beers in their hands, music playing from their truck speakers.

I glance around the area to see if I recognize anyone until my eyes meet with Beau’s. Then, I stop short and stare at him.

He gives me a friendly grin, and when he says, “Excuse me,” to the person he’s talking to and then heads in my direction, my heart starts to beat a little faster.

The thought of seeing him tonight never crossed my mind. I figured it would only be older kids here, and honestly, I was hoping to meet someone new, but as he walks closer, my thoughts change dramatically.

We never spoke after that party a couple of weeks ago when we were dancing and he left me on the makeshift dance floor to break up the fight. Considering no one knows Aaron kissed me during that fight, I know Beau has no clue about the jumbled mess my mind went through from dancing with him to kissing Aaron in a matter of seconds.

Just the memory of those few moments makes my chest tight and my breathing harsh.

One of those guys turned out to be a total bust, and here, I just happen to run into the other one right when I need a distraction most.

God sure does seem to work in mysterious ways sometimes.

As he approaches me, he makes it clear what his intentions are. Reaching out to me, he entangles his finger with mine and says, “Hey, glad to see you here.”

I grin as I try my hardest not to act affected by the way he’s touching me along with the way his dark features look even sexier in the light of the moon above us.

“Same to you,” I say as I let out a slow breath. “Wasn’t sure who we’d see here.”

“Seems it’s my lucky night. Can I get you a drink?” He motions to the truck bed, where all the drinks are being held.

I shrug. “Sure.” I turn to Heather, who’s already watching me with wide eyes. “I’m going to—”

“Uh-huh. Go get that sexy man of yours,” she taunts, making my face turn bright red.

I close my eyes, feeling like I’m going to die of embarrassment, when Beau whispers in my ear, “I think you’re sexy too.”

He walks away and tugs my hand to follow him.

Now, not only am I super embarrassed, but I’m also absolutely flustered by his comment.

So, maybe what I was feeling that night was real and Aaron just got in the way?
