Beau grabs a beer and hands it to me after he pops the top. He holds it up in a cheers motion, and we clink drinks before taking a sip.

When he leans back on the truck, so nonchalant and sure of himself, my mind turns to goo as I take him all in. He’s wearing a simple white shirt, but he fills it out more than most guys do, making it look anything but simple.

“How’s your summer so far?” he asks, taking me out of my stupor.

Instantly, my mind goes to Aaron, but I shake off the idea. “Pretty non-eventful so far.”

“How come I haven’t seen you around?” He reaches out and grabs my hand, bringing me closer to him. “You left me after our dance.”

I let out a sharp laugh when I think about what I was actually doing after our dance, then try to recover. “Everyone left after that, remember? The cops showed up.”

“Yeah, but I went looking for you, and you were nowhere to be found.”

“I left with Heather. You have my number. I guess you weren’t that concerned, or you would have called.” I take a drink, keeping my eyes on him to see what his reaction will be.

He grins with a very slight tilt to his head. “Yeah, I guess I could have.”

“Then, why didn’t you?”

He stares at me without responding when someone approaches us.

“Sadie?” I hear and instantly recognize the voice.

“Hey, Aaron,” I say quickly, then turn back to face Beau, stepping closer to him.

The expression Beau gives proves he didn’t miss how I just dissed Aaron. I take a sip of my drink and notice the way Beau is staring at Aaron over my shoulder.

Thankfully, Aaron walks away, leaving us alone, and Beau is quick to ask, “Is there something I missed between you two?”

I shake my head. “Nope.” Then, I take another drink.

He brings his beer up to his lips. “Whatever you say.”

“Party on the fifty-yard line. You guys in?” Justin says as he slaps Beau on his back.

I let out a sharp laugh. “You’re joking, right?”

“Why not?” He chuckles with his hands out wide.

“I can give you a thousand reasons as to why not,” Aaron says from behind us.

I turn and meet eyes with him, then look to Justin, wanting even more to go against anything Aaron says. “I’m in.”

“All right,” Justin says smoothly.

“If she goes, I go,” Beau says as he pulls me closer to him.

I place my hand on his chest and give him a kiss on his cheek. “Let’s go.”

Aaron grabs my arm to stop me. “Sadie, you’re not serious, are you?”

I shake him off. “Yes, I am.” I look around to the group of kids gathering who want to go. “Sounds like fun.” I drink the rest of my beer and hand it to Aaron as everyone else starts to walk off.

I see him clench his jaw in frustration, but I don’t give a shit what he thinks. Instead, I grab Beau’s hand, and we head toward Justin’s truck with Beau hopping in the backseat after I get settled.
