After we park, we all walk up to the event together. When Aaron laces his fingers through mine as we walk, I feel my face flush at the idea of this actually happening.

We see a group of our friends already gathered, so we head toward them. Everyone says hello, but when Gabe stands up from where he’s sitting, giving Beau a direct view to where we are still holding hands, I watch as he clenches his jaw, then turns away.

Megan is quick to hit my arm, making sure I saw what just happened. I glare her way, making it clear to not make a big deal about it, and thankfully, she doesn’t.

We all hang out for a few minutes before Aaron leaves to grab us something to eat while I stay with the group.

It doesn’t take long for Beau to take advantage of Aaron being gone before he grabs me and asks, “Can we talk?”

I glance to Megan and Heather, whose eyes go big as I say, “Sure.”

We step a few feet away from the group, and then he turns to face me. “Is this a joke?”

“What do you mean?”

“Don’t give me that shit. You and Aaron. Are you guys a thing? When did that happen?”

I take a deep breath and go for it, telling him what’s going on and not trying to skirt around the truth. “We are. He came over last night, and we had a lot to talk about.”

“A lot to talk about? Really? Like you didn’t know he was into you the entire time?” He looks at me like I’m stupid.

“It’s different with us. I know you didn’t grow up here, but we have a lot of history together.”

“No one needs to live here for long to know you two have history. In case you’ve forgotten, I met you both at the exact same time. It was kind of obvious then, but you kept telling me there was nothing going on between you two.”

“And there wasn’t then.” I stand up straighter to make my point that I was telling the truth.

“He was always into you. He just didn’t start letting you know until I came into the picture. I see how it works.”

I motion between the two of us. “We weren’t together, Beau. I never knew what was going on with you. Over the last year, you acted like you were interestedmultiple times, but never really made it official. What was I to think?”

He holds up his hands in front of him. “You’re right. I didn’t. No need to remind me of that because it looks like there never will be an us either.”

He walks away, leaving me standing there by myself. I look back to the group and see Aaron watching us. When I see the slight tilt to his lips as he watches Beau walk away, my stomach turns. Not because of what just happened with Beau, but because of the way Aaron has this glee about him, like he just won.

Yet again, I feel like the prize in a game I didn’t know I was playing between these two.

CHAPTERTWENTY

Sophomore Year

It’s Thursday night, and of course, the team is on their way to my house. Even though Aaron is on the team now, Dad still allows him to come over early and help me get ready, just like he did when we were little.

When I hear him knock on the door, I have to laugh at how different I feel, knowing it’s him. We’ve been officially together now for two weeks, and so far, things are going pretty good. I mean, really nothing has changed between us, except, now, we make out instead of just hanging out—and believe me, it’s way better to make out!

My dad is in the garage when he arrives, so I wrap my arms around him, giving him a kiss after he steps in and I close the door behind him.

“How’s my girl?” he asks when we pull away.

“Better now,” I respond before grabbing his hand and walking him to the kitchen.

We start to prepare everything like we have a hundred times before, only this time, we stop and kiss each other as we walk by one another or he cops a feel when he sees the opportunity.

Once all of it is laid out, I stop and check everything. “I think that’s it!” I say with pride.

“One more thing.” Aaron grabs me and pushes me up against the wall in a passionate kiss that completely takes my breath away.

When we hear the garage door open, he pushes off of me and starts breaking down the boxes from the food we just prepared as I hide behind the wall, hoping my cheeks don’t give away what was just happening.
