“Everything ready?” Dad asks.

“Yep, we’re ready,” Aaron replies as he picks up the boxes he just stepped on to flatten and puts them in the trash.

I grab something out of the fridge and put it on the counter.

My dad stops to look at me. “Everything okay? Your cheeks are flushed.”

I instantly feel them get even redder as I try my hardest not to look at Aaron, and try to act like I don’t know what he’s talking about.

“Yep. Nothing’s wrong. I feel fine,” I respond, feeling like an idiot.

My dad knows me too well, and now, I feel like I have a huge neon flashing light across my forehead that saysLiar.

He glances at Aaron and thankfully leaves it alone, probably thinking he doesn’t want to have a private conversation in front of Aaron yet he has no idea Aaron is who caused my face to look this way.

We’re literally saved by the bell when someone rings our doorbell, and my dad leaves us in the kitchen to go let them in.

Once he’s gone, I let out a huge sigh of relief and turn to smack Aaron when I hear him laughing at the situation.

“You’re going to get us caught!”

He grabs my ass and pulls me close to him. “I know. That’s what makes it so much more fun.”

I push him away as a few of the players head straight to the kitchen, ready to demolish the food we have set out.

The night goes on like normal, except for the huge elephant in the room—Beau.

We haven’t spoken since he walked away from me at the festival, but mainly because we haven’t really seen each other.

Now, here we are, in my home, with the rest of the team, but I feel like I can cut the tension between us. It’s obvious the other players know with the way they all glance at each other when either Aaron or Beau speaks. I don’t know what they think will happen. It’s not like the two are going to fight right here in my home.

The night seems to drag on, and when it’s finally time for the guys to start heading home, Dad stops Aaron and Beau. “You two, stay back for a bit.”

My stomach drops as I watch them both look at each other before heading to the living room to sit back down. I walk into the kitchen, pretending like I didn’t just see what took place, only to be summoned myself.

“Sadie, can you come here, please?” Dad hollers across the house.

I walk into the living room and am met by both guys staring straight at me and my dad standing over them.

“Why don’t you have a seat?” He motions for me to sit on the recliner as both guys are sitting on the couch.

I glance their way in question before turning my attention back to my dad.

“Don’t try to act surprised, like you all don’t know why I have you here right now.”

I bite my lip as realization hits me that we haven’t been as sneaky as we thought.

“Aaron, Beau, I knew something—or rather, someone—had come between you two when I had to break up your fight the other day at practice.”

I instantly turn my head toward them with wide eyes, but they both pay me no attention.

What fight?

Aaron didn’t tell me anything about getting in a fight with Beau at practice. That’s when I remember the cut he had on his knuckles. He told me he accidentally hit it on something during practice.

Accidentally, my ass.

“This isn’t my first rodeo. You guys forget just how long I’ve been coaching. I see everything.” He looks right at me. “No matter how much you try to hide it.”
