CHAPTERTWENTY-FIVE

Summer Before Junior Year

I’m watching a movie in my room when there’s a knock at my door.

“Yeah?” I yell out.

“Sadie, Megan’s here to see you,” Dad says as he opens the door a little wider to let her in.

I quickly hit the Stop button and sit up to greet her. I’ve tried to call her multiple times, but she never called me back. Seeing her here is a surprise I am nowhere near prepared for.

“Thanks, Coach Z,” she says.

He gives her a nod, then leaves and closes the door behind him.

Megan stands at the front of my room, like she’s afraid to enter, and it only makes this encounter more uncomfortable.

She looks down at her hands that she’s playing with in front of her, so I speak up. “I’m sorry for what I did.”

Her eyes meet mine, and I can see the hurt in them.

“I like him, Sadie,” she says with authority.

Her words feel like a knife to the gut, which frustrates me to no end.

I nod as I close my eyes in thought, trying to get the pain radiating through me to go away.

It needs to go away.

“I know,” I respond.

She comes closer to me. “And you shouldn’t care about that fact.”

I nod some more, fighting the tears stinging the backs of my eyes.

“Why would you make a scene like that? You’re with Aaron.”

I sigh. “I don’t know what came over me. Yes, I’ve been dating Aaron, but I don’t even know if that’s true anymore. He still hasn’t talked to me.”

“Do you blame him?”

I rub my eyes as a tear falls. “No.”

“What’s going on with you, Sadie?”

I drop my head against my headboard and look up to the ceiling. “I honestly don’t know.”

“Beau was never yours to begin with. You got together with Aaron and left him hanging, remember?”

“Oh, yes, I remember,” I say barely above a whisper.

“You know you hurt Beau when you did that, right?”

I snap my eyes to hers. “Seriously?”

She throws her arms up in the air. “You’ve got to be kidding me. You were literally kissing him the night before you showed up with Aaron by your side to announce you guys were together.”

“Yeah, but we were never official or anything. I didn’t know what we were.” I hear my response, but even I know how shitty it sounds. She doesn’t need to tell me.
