My dad tilts his head to the side. “Oh, really? A date, huh?”

“Yes, sir. A band that I think she will enjoy is playing at the Brickhouse.”

“Isn’t that place twenty-one and over?” my dad asks.

“They are all ages when shows like this come. I’ve been a few times, and there’s never been a problem. Plus, I promise I won’t let her leave my sight.”

My dad walks around his desk and places his hand on Beau’s shoulder. “I know you’ll take good care of her.” He looks at me. “I was waiting for this day to come. Seeing you two together.”

I let out a small laugh as I look at Beau, who’s grinning back at me.

“That’s just fine with me. You two have fun. Be back by eleven o’clock.”

“That won’t be a problem.” Beau holds his hand out to my dad. “Thank you, Coach.”

They shake hands, and my dad gives him a firm nod.

We turn and leave, and now, I’m even more excited than I was only ten minutes ago. “You’re taking me to see a band? Who?”

“They’re called Deftones. Don’t worry; you’ll like them.” He gives me a quick kiss as we walk to the parking lot.

“I can’t believe my dad is so okay with you taking me out,” I say as I hop into Beau’s truck.

“Your dad probably knows me better than my own dad at this point. If he doesn’t trust me with you, then I wouldn’t be playing for him as much as I do.”

“True.” I reach to buckle my seat belt. “Do you have a CD to play for me so I can listen to this band we’re going to see?”

He pulls it out of his glove box and holds it up for me. “You know I do.”

The idea of new music excites me just as much as it does to be with him. Music is something none of my friends are really into, especially rock, so getting to share this excitement with Beau makes him even more special. I love that he introduces me to things I don’t hear on the radio or that not everyone already knows about. I feel like it’s our own little secret world we get to share.

I grab the CD cover to see what looks like a sucker that you would use to get the snot out of a baby’s nose. “Um … why would this be on their cover?” I ask, trying not to laugh.

“Don’t know. Don’t care. As long as it’s good music inside, they can put whatever they want on the cover.”

He starts the truck and puts the CD in his player.

A single guitar riff fills the area around me in five quick strums, then a slow one that repeats over and over again. The lead singer comes on, singing slowly over the riff for a few lines, and then my favorite part of rock music happens—when everything comes on at once and your adrenaline gets so pumped up as the beat drops, only to fuel your soul with pure happiness.

All of my senses come alive at the sound, and Beau reaches over to place his hand on my thigh.

“I love watching you hear music for the first time. Your face lights up with this energy.”

“Yeah, because I feel it all over. I love this. How did you find them?”

“They’re out of California. Some friends from back home sent their album to me. When I saw they were coming here, I knew I had to go.”

I lean over and give him a quick kiss. “Thank you for inviting me.”

He looks to the road then, like he’s thinking, and then looks back to me. “If I tell you something, promise you won’t laugh.”

“Why would I laugh?”

He turns his attention back to the road, and I can tell he’s embarrassed to tell me something.

I grab his arm. “What? I promise I won’t laugh.”
