“You have got to be shitting me.”

“No!” I yell out. “Go get him.”

He hangs up, and I pace my room, wondering what I can do. Then, it hits me. My dad can lie all he wants, but if I’m there to fight, saying I was trespassing on the Spencer’s property, then maybe it will go on official record.

I grab my keys and race out of my house and straight to my truck. After I crank the engine, I peel out, racing down our long driveway. Our properties might back up to one another, but to drive from one house to the next, I have to go all the way down the hill and around this side of the ranch, which has never felt so big in my entire life.

When I get to their house, the sheriff is already there.

I put the truck in park and hop out, racing to their door when I’m stopped dead in my tracks by Sheriff Townsend escorting Randy out in handcuffs.

“No! Stop!” I plead, grabbing Sheriff Townsend’s arm. “I was trespassing on his property. He thought Iwas going to burn down his barn, like my dad did. He had every right to protect what was his.”

“Sorry, son. The law is the law. I was told he was on your property. The justice system will have to sort it out from here.”

I look at Randy, who is hanging his head, completely defeated by my dad once again.

“This is bullshit!”

“Damn right it is!” Thomas comes up from behind me. Grabbing my arm, he turns me to face him and coldcocks me right in the jaw.

I fall to the ground, but don’t get up as I rub my face.

“Get up and fight me!” Thomas yells.

“No! Stop!” Natalie screams from the front door, her mom right behind her.

“Natalie!” I yell out, getting up to go to her.

“Don’t you fucking dare,” Thomas growls, pushing me back toward my truck.

“Natalie, I’m sorry,” I plead.

“Get your ass off my property. With your truck here, there’s no way to say you weren’t on my property, and I will personally kill you myself.”

I look over to where Sheriff Townsend has already loaded Randy into the back of the patrol car, and he’s getting in the car himself.

What’s done is done. I need to find another way to help him before something really bad happens and this family loses everything.

“I will make this right, I promise,” I state, looking Thomas in the eye.

“You’ve already done enough. I never want to seeyour fucking face for as long as I live,” Thomas spits out. “Now, leave.”

“Natalie, I’m sorry,” I say one more time before jumping in my still-running truck and leaving, having no clue where I’m going to go.

There’s no way I can go home, so I go to what I consider my second home—Ben’s place.

On my way there, I dial his number.

“Ben, I need your help.”

“What’s up?”

“Natalie’s dad has been arrested. It’s a long story, but I’m on my way to your house.”

“No shit?”

“Yeah. It’s been one fucked-up night. I’ll be there shortly.” I hang up and drive like a maniac through the streets of Leighton River to get to Ben’s place.
