Page 84 of How We Hated

“Oh, this is good,” she says as I internally panic.

Thankfully, Susie is quick on her feet, acting like she didn’t see Trish standing there and completely blowing her off.

“Excuse us,” she says with the same glee as when we were inside the restroom.

Trish grabs my arm and stops me as we walk away. “Don’t think I didn’t see Dalton leaving this restroom a few minutes ago while Susie was standing guard.”

I look at Susie, who tries to release me from Trish’s grip.

“I just had to see who his latest conquest was. Because that’s all you are … a conquest to him.” Her smug expression makes my stomach turn. “Never thought I’d see you walking out though.”

I rip my arm from her grip. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

She lets out a harsh laugh. “Oh, but you do. And I really wonder what your brother would think if I shared this little tidbit of information with him.”

“There’s nothing to share, so back off,” Susie demands.

Trish steps back and holds her hands up like she’s surrendering. “Okay. You keep believing that, and we’ll see just who has the last laugh.”

We turn and walk away trying to act unfazed by her even though I’m internally freaking out.

“Don’t listen to her,” Susie says.

I can’t help but relive every word she said on repeat in my head.

I’m so screwed.

I head back to the table, where Dalton is sitting, looking as cool as a cucumber with his legs sprawled out in front of him. When our eyes meet, he tenses up, knowing something isn’t right.

What’s wrong?he mouths.

I shake my head, blowing him off, and grab a sip of my water from the table, trying to give my attention to anything in this room but him.

He lightly kicks my foot under the table, and I close my eyes, taking in a big inhale before I look at him.

What happened?he mouths.

I close my eyes again, praying the tears that are stinging my eyes go away. Susie has been watching our interaction and decides to take the bull by the horns when she walks over to him, whispering something in his ear.

Without even giving me a second glance, he stands, throwing his chair back in the process, and marches over to where Trish is with a bunch of girls.

Susie comes over to sit with me as we try our hardest to not make it so obvious that we’re watching their every move.

Dalton is sly about his emotions and words with the way he’s trying to be friendly with her and not make a scene, but you can tell she’s not buying it.

With every second that goes by, my chest becomes tighter, and my stomach feels like it’s doing somersaults inside me.

I’m caught staring when Trish looks my way, and instead of flinching to turn my attention elsewhere, I just close my eyes, feeling even guiltier than before and owning up to my betrayal.

He walks away from her and heads back to our table. I’m amazed he can keep his composure the way he is. Seemingly unaffected by the conversation he just had.

After he sits down, he grabs his phone and sends me a text.

It’s taken care of.

I don’t respond, just throw my phone back on the table and try my hardest to get out of my head and enjoy the rest of our night.

The dance committee gets up on stage saying it’s time for the homecoming king and queen to be announced, and I try my hardest to change my mood and be present. When they call Ben and Maya as the winners it hits me even more. Not only can I not be with Dalton, I can’t even cheer for my new friends because up until a few weeks ago, I hated them too, and everyone in this school knows that.
