Then I heard the distinctive sound of “Wot’s all this?” as a police officer walked up to the car.

Shit.

The last thing I wanted was for Je Sweet to get arrested, even if she was a violent unhinged asshole.

“Are you all right, ma’am?” he asked.

“Don’t you mean ma’ams?” I said, before I could stop myself, and the officer, a stolid-looking man in his 60s, goggled his eyes at me.

I heard a noise from Sweet that might have been a laugh or a grunt.

“Nothing to worry about,” I added hastily. “We were just practicing a scene from an upcoming performance.”

“Hm,” said the officer, looking between Sweet and I. “Why don’t you let her go so she can tell me if she’s really OK?”

Sweet let me go, but slowly, and I shook my head brightly, even though my arms were aching.

“It’s fine!” I said. “Thank you for checking,” I added conciliatingly, and the officer nodded reluctantly and left, although his eyes were still flicking between Sweet and I.

When he had left, Sweet leaned against my door so I couldn’t open it, endlessly long legs stretched out in front of her.

“I know Heavenly Lights has problems,” Sweet said, “But you’re the last fucking person who could fix them, Elowyn.”

“Get out of my way or I’ll call that cop back,” I snarled.

She raised her body up slightly, and I got in the car, jerking the door as hard as I could to slam into her. Then I drove back to my hotel with dry, angry eyes, trying to ignore replaying the derisive curve to her mouth as she had watched me drive off.

She wasnotright. She was just an asshole.

But I felt twinges of worry.

What if things didn’t get better at the club?

ELOWYN

Ihad barely taken a sip of my coffee one morning a few days later when Miss Min came in to tell me that the mayor had sent an urgent message to Heavenly Lights for someone to come meet with him in his office on an issue of utmost importance.

She was twisting her hands around. “And I really don’t think I ought to go,” she said. “Last year I protested when the new mall parking lot destroyed the habitat of a very rare species of salamander and got a little carried away. I may have thrown some fake blood at the mayor and it caused a bit of a ruckus.”

“Sweet baby Jesus,” I said, “OK, I’ll go. But what the fuck actually happened last night?”

“They didn’t say,” Miss Min replied.

I had a sinking feeling in my stomach. I knew I should have gone to the show last night. But the last few performances had been so well-behaved I didn’t think I needed to.

I raced down the hallway to the dressing room. The guys had just started arriving for the day.

“What happened last night?” I shouted, startling everyone.

For a moment there was a silence so profound you could have heard a pin drop.

“What do you mean?” Liam asked.

I started to feel a growing horror crawl over my skin as I could see everyone carefullynotlooking at Beau again.

“I mean did something out of the ordinary happen last night?” I asked.
