“If you want to run me over with a car, half as much as I want to run you over with one, then fair is fair.”

“And that means your wide receivers can catch?”

“No,” I leaned in and pecked the tip of her nose. “They just have the best quarterback ever throwing them bullets, so the wide receivers are just lucky bastards.”

“That means you have no intention of kissing my ass.” Her eyes narrowed a little, humor laced with lust shining bright as we got closer and closer.

“No Ref, not today at least. But that pair of lips will be kissing your lips,” I pecked her lips then moved down to her neck. “Your neck, your ear, your cheeks, your forehead…” I trailed off, kissing her everywhere I was telling her I was going to. Before I backed away, I added, “I am going to do other things to your ass, though.”

Chapter27

Charleigh

Icouldn't have been anymore attracted to Levi than I was at that moment. He was saying all the right things, making me feel fun and free. Teasing me with a trip to the eye doctor was not only corny, but perfect. It showed me another side to him, one I had no idea was under all the mean and nasty words he normally spewed.

Our safe words.

The ones that kept a wall between us.

Words I spewed right back to him because I had to.

Would we go back to those two people? Or was that night the beginning of something else? More importantly, were we risking too much for something too weak? A physical attraction that wouldn't withstand the damage we would wreak on our careers in the process?

Enjoy tonight, Charleigh.

I let Levi lead me up the stairs in the back off the office area where snacks had been set up on the roof top. I gasp at the romanticism of it all, moving slowly in case there was a booby trap waiting to whisk me away.

“When did you do this?”

“I had my housekeeper drop some things off before Dr. Jay closed up for the night. I went to Bobby’s to work out and just prayed it was all still in place when we got here.”

The building wasn't a huge skyscraper, only two stories high. But it overlooked the park and in the distance were the bigger buildings of Atlanta, all lit up and glowing. It added to the ambiance, like huge night lights for us to gaze at while we ate.

I took a seat on a bench near the wall of the roof and waited as Levi poured us a glass of wine. When we were settled with a glass in our hands and snacks sitting between us, I realized I had a million questions I needed to ask.

Did I risk changing the moment because of my curiosity? Should I go ahead and tell him about the fight? I had questions for Levi before I betrayed Bobby. I needed to know I was telling someone that wouldn’t stab me in the back in return. Levi may have been a true romantic that night. He may have been making me swoon and laugh. He was definitely making me feel special. But I would be an idiot not to keep my guard up. Enjoying the evening didn’t mean I was dumb.

“Is this all still because I sucked your dick?” I cut my eyes at him playfully.

He shot his eyes back and smiled as his lips touched his wine glass. “Maybe.”

I followed his sip of wine with one of my own, hoping it calmed my nerves. “Can I ask you something?”

Where did I start? Did I start with what his intentions were with romancing me when I was clearly always up for sex? Did I ask about what the deal with Richard Elder was? Or did I just skip straight to wondering if he would be mad if bets were placed on his rematch with Sisco?

I didn't get the chance to ask any of it because instead of letting me ask a question, he had one of his own. “What happened in Chicago?”

“Chicago?” His question took me off guard. I wasn't prepared for him to ask anything, much less about what happened in Chicago.

“After the game,” he added, even though I knew exactly what he meant. I could also tell by his expression that he already knew the answer to that question as well.

“Nothing that I’m sure won't happen again.” I tried shrugging off the conversation since it made me both sad and uncomfortable. It took a lot of pep talks with myself to get me to relax for the night, so I didn't want to start off with old shit.

“It better not,” Levi demanded, making a statement that only I could hear but felt like it was directed at everyone in the world.

“What do you care?”

“Torturing you is my job. Touching you is my job.”
